Welcome to a new feature here at LVS: The Brilliant Woman of the Week, where we celebrate outstanding women who have something important to say. With SO many brilliant women to choose from, where do I start? Well, I think I'll start here.....This week's BWOTW is Melissa Harris-Lacewell: Associate Professor of Politics and African American Studies at Princeton University. She is a regular commentator on the hugely popular Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. (My personal FAVE news show) And she has been on Bill Moyer's Journal. Melissa has a really cool blog called "THE KITCHEN TABLE" http://princetonprofs.blogspot.com/ where she converses with another brilliant woman, Dr. Yolanda Pierce, who is also a Princeton professor. Wow, I just mentioned three brilliant women in one paragraph, but let's focus on Melissa. ;D
Melissa is the author of an award winning book called "Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk, and Black Political Thought" I love the way she connects political ideology and popular culture. She taught a course called "Disaster, Race, and American Politics" which explored the politics of Hurricane Katrina. (Remember Katrina?) Her colleagues at Princeton have recognized her as " one of the most talented intellectuals of her generation." She's also a single mom to her 7 yr. old daughter.
She wrote this in the Nov 6, 2008 edition of The Nation:
"When Barack Obama was elected as the first black president of the United States, African-Americans became the solution instead of the problem. For many black folks, Obama's victory has momentarily healed the double consciousness that is an ordinary part of our lives. To be a citizen in a democracy is to be not only the ruled but also the ruler, to not only submit to law but to craft it, to not only die for your country but to live fully in it. In this moment, we are citizens."
Melissa is a brilliant communicator and scholar, and she seems to be a very down to earth person. I am looking forward to a new era of brilliant scholarly women taking the forefront in the mainstream media and beyond.

I find this thread refreshing. But I also find it insulting on two levels. One - there are so many brilliant women in the Lehigh Valley. Why did you have to choose one outside of the area? What does she have to do with the Lehigh Valley? And two - why is it only women? You protest The Morning Call regarding its intolerance towards all sorts of people. Where is yours? Why don't you have a thread regarding "A Brillant Minority of the Week."? Please let's have equality for all!

I've been holding my tongue on this all week but I must speak out and its the Villa's example that gives me the courage to do so. On the subject of PHONIES, you got that right. The same guy (Molovinsky) who publishes all sorts of lies and bashes and smears against the Chen Arts Group and Angie Villa, has te nerve to show up at the Chen Arts blog commenting and making sexist remarks about a Chen member who died tragically recently. You have no class whatsoever Mike or brains.

JUst a few of Molovinsky's many published lies, smears and bashes against the Chen Arts Group (CHARGE) and Angie Villa that he has "approved of" at his moderated blog (but he thought the late FRan Weaver was hot!):
* inaugural meeting of the Chen arts group. During that one, A-town arts czar [Joe] Skrapits waxed on at length, saying absolutely nothing
* most of the [Chen] artists there seemed most concerned about getting grants
* grant-seeking Stepford wife Angie [Villa] is looking to parlay her Chen position into money
* After starting off with a bold counterculture vision, the Villas quickly embraced the A-town establishment, including government (Pawlowski) and business (Butz)
* the arts suffocate in that atmosphere. So why do it? Money baby. For all I know, they're [the Villas] trying to sell a few CDs along with Angie's junior high paintings
Considering his "history" of allowing BO'Hare to bash the Chen Arts Group and the Villas at his "Memory Lane" blog, Molovinsky obviously came looking for premeditated trouble when he posted a comment at the Chen Arts blog.
Since then, Molovinsky has been using his "grief" (wink wink) as a weapon, teaming up with O'Hare, who obviously wrote the "set-up" comment that was posted here on FEB 1 at 3:19 so that they could re-print the comment (and attribute it to the Villas), at O'Hare's snake pit blog.

Bill, keep in mind that Mike Molovinsky is elderly and also from a bygone era (Memory Lane?) when behavior that would now get a man charged with sexual harassment was routinely thought of (by men) as "compliments" towards women, e.g., "you should show off your figure around the office more sweetie, you're really built!" etc. Sadly, women had to endure these neanderthal males and their leering "compliments" in the "good old days" that Molovinsky is incessantly pining over and even more sadly in the present via anachronistic goof balls like Mike ("3%") Molovinsky. "Anonymous" (wink wink) O'Hare was right: Molovinsky is a sexist chauvinist and his "tribute" was anything but.

Interesting....and I know for a fact that one of O'Hater's new recruits is a (presumably former) member of an activist Allentown arts group....who I PERSONALLY saw having FUN (at NIGHT!) at an event at 7th & Liberty streets in Downtown Allentown! Yessir. Curiously, this is not mentioned among the "no culture" slamfest happening at Bryan & Andrew KleinerWhiner's blog, under the tutelage of Bernie O'Hare and Allentown Mayoral Hopeful Mike ("3%") Molovinsky.
