We Like Downtown Allentown

Bill and I like to visit downtown Allentown, especially Hamilton St. and 7th St. We live in N. Allentown not too far from the downtown. Recently I spent some time at 9th and Hamilton during the Chen Arts Show at the Butz Corporate Center. It's a beautiful modern building with a great view of the street. Over 200 people visited the art show during the week it was open. It was an exciting event! There's a cool video at http://www.chenarts.blogspot.com/

Here are some of the outstanding downtown places we have visited recently: We like The Brew Works for dinner, House of Chen, The Bay Leaf , and the fab Deli Plaza for lunch and back for dinner sometimes! We have visited the Farr Lofts and they are really cool. We have been to Yodi's art studio on Hamilton. We have been to The Caring Place. Bill's sister owns a store on Hamilton Street. And our wonderful eye doctor Nancy Perez is on Hamilton. We recently sat in the balcony of Symphony Hall for the Lehigh Valley Christmas Show(I know that's off of Hamilton), and we go to the Liberty Bell Museum every year to see "Pip the Mouse." We visited Art and Soul Tattoo Parlor and Gallery, where we ran into Patrick Villa who was attending a skateboarding event. (See photo of me and a sweaty Patrick at the sidebar) The Villas have performed at Croc Rock and the Sterling Hotel. We have visited the Musselman Ctr. for the Arts (Antonio Salemme Foundation gallery), and toured 808 Hamilton, which, hopefully, could turn out to be Allentown's new "Open Space Gallery," which was once housed at 808, wouldn't that be deja vu cool!

Hamilton St. is kinda quiet on weekends and evenings, but 7th St. is really hopping. There seems to be a lot of new small businesses opening on 7th. Gianni had his hair cut at one of the hip barber shops on a Sunday afternoon and boy were those barbers busy! Pete Lewnes's house on 7th is really cool, and his renovations are spectacular. The first Chen Arts Show was held at his house during The Old Allentown House Tour. Mayor Pawlowski spoke at the press conference, and I got to pose for a picture with the mayor! 7th St is very ethnic and vibrant. It's a bit grittier than Hamilton but we love the humanity.

Mohamed at Deli Plaza on Hamilton (a Chen artist), is so friendly and accomodating. And he makes the best soup I have ever tasted. Everything is always fresh and made to order. Jenny and the House of Chen crew are tops, the food is great and their prices are very reasonable. We always enjoy seeing Mike Fegley (Mike used to be our neighbor) at the fab Brew Works. Sure beats the "faux downtowns" at the Promenade or the LV Mall where some people are mad to see ya and have that "get outta the way of my weekend" attitude.

I know that we can't just ignore Allentown's problems: the crime, the gangs, the poverty, and the homelessness. I taught in the ASD so I have seen children growing up in poverty. But I think if people from suburbia and the west end would visit downtown regularly, get to know some of the business owners, and the people who now live there, then their perception of downtown Allentown would change. I am hopeful that our downtown will continue to improve. I hope more events, like The Chen Arts Group Show "Momentum" can be held there. I was disappointed in the lights on the Christmas tree at PPL Plaza. I think they could have been much more spectacular. So let's light up the downtown with people!

Mrs. Dottie, that's a wonderful photograph of you with our Mayor Pawlowski (who is the best thing to happen to Allentown in many decades) and I can't get to Deli Plaza enough either! Breakfast, lunch, dinner, any time you go there it's great and I've been there all times! Thanks for this upbeat article! Allentown is a gem!

Villas lest you forgot, my husband and me and my sister-in-law saw you and Angie and the rest of the band do a terrific show at the Phiosopher's Stone when it was still there on Hamilton street and the late, and great Al Guerrero was playing bass with you that night. Very enjoyable show! And Al is greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure to know him.

Thanks Anon 10:18, I remember The Philosopher's Stone, it was a cool place. Al G. was great, and we miss him. We also did a show called MAD Fun Downtown (Music, Art, Dance, and Food) at the Theatre Outlet when it was at 9th St, right off of Hamilton. The late Sheena Villa danced at that show, Ro Geseck did the art work, Kevin Curry cooked. And I had just given birth to G a month before the show! We played at the first "Dancin' in the Streets" event opening for the Abba Tribute band, and we were sponsored by Roberson/Butz architects, who designed the Butz Corporate Ctr. Let's see, we did a show at Trout Hall too, when I was 8 months pregnant and it was 100 degrees, so I can't forget that one!

Hi Chris, thanks!

We were gonna make this an annual event (evry November cuz of the "N" in F-U-N), we should shoot for next November, not that anyone has to wait that long for mad fun in Downtown Allentown, you can do that today/tonite!

I first met now Mayor Pawlowski when he was in charge of the Alliance For Building Communities. His passion for Allentown really struck me, he had a passion and love for Allentown that I thought was truly remarkable coming from a person who wasn't originally from here. If half "the natives" loved Allentown as much as Mayor Pawlowski does we could progress faster. As is, Pawlowski has to drag naysayers and sabateurs kicking and screaming into the bright future he knows is around the corner. And yes, the corner is in Downtown Allentown!

Anonymous said...

It's easy to look at downtown as though the glass is half empty, but I definitely see it as half full...if not more than half. I've enjoyed being here and hope to see more good things happen.

Bring back SUPER SUNDAY in the All-American City! Remember that? We should do that again in Downtown Allentown with all the stores open and with everybody mixing and mingling, I think we just might all like each other!

SHARP DRESSED MAN!

Angie Villa said...

Concerned Citizen,

I agree, there certainly are a lot of "naysayers" who don't really do much to make things better. I am all for constructive criticism, and "watchdogs" but there are some people who just love to see others fail, or sabotage the plans of good people who really care about the city. Like Sarina, I tend to be an optimist. And I think there is a lot to be optimistic about in ALlentown. Just look at how a community of local artists came together to accomplish something really big. This proves that people with diverse backgrounds (age, ethnicity, socio-economic,
etc) can work together and make real progress. CHARGE!

Even staunch neocon Pam Varkony voted for Mayor Pawlowski. Pam reveals this in a recent post at her blog. Her several commenters seemed very dismayed. As my beloved Aunt Martha used to tell me, "jdg, you can't judge a book by its cover."

Great post! Other downtown places we love are the Art Museum (great for kids) and the public library. So many delicious little ethnic restaurants (La Placita, Kow Thai, the Salvadoran place on Hamilton). The Brew Works feeds kids for free on Sundays and we never forget to bring our growler(s)
I have brought a lot of suburban friends into the city and they've all had a great time. Oh yeah, this city has flaws, but it is not the awful place people suggest. There are more and more of us helping to build a strong community.

Sadly .. for some .. those nostalgic days of "shave and a haircut (for white folks), 2 bits!!" trolley cars on Hamilton Street, and all people of color conveniently huddled together and living in tin shacks along what's now Martin Luther King Boulevard (remember those "good old days?") are gone and they ain't coming back. Also, may we have your attention please: no mo Hess's Patio and them gargantuan loss-leader portions of strawberry pie. Yeah I know, they were HUGE! Poof. Sorry. So now what? Mayor Pawlowski's idea is: Let's MOVE FORWARD. Together. Sounds good to me, let's go.

Bravo, anon 7:48.

Readers, the anon comment at 6:41am Saturday originally appeared at 6:19pm Friday, but for some reason, the link the commenter provided to the Election Results, which worked fine yesterday, wasn't taking you to the same page this morning (?) so I re-posted the comment with a link to LC Voter Registration's Main Page. Once there, click on "Election Results" and you can get to where yesterday's link took you. Hey, some romp that 2005 Mayoral election. I had forgotten how lop-sided a Pawlowski victory that was and the 3 years since have certainly illuminated why.

Pawlowski administration has helped secure over $480 million dollars in new investment in Allentown through exciting and dynamic projects including:

* The beautiful new "Iron Pigs" baseball park

* Redeveloping Hanover Acres into the new Overlook Park

* Clean-up of the former Exide Battery Plant

* Development of the Bridgeworks by the Creek industrial complex

* Allentown Brew Works (woo hoo!)

* Two (2) modern downtown office buildings

* A-Town Center Square Senior Residences

* Farr Lofts

* Towns at Trexler Square

Also ...

* Pawlowski returned Allentown to fiscal stability, from a deficit to a surplus, while saving taxpayers $16 million dollars

* Pawlowski replaced 72 retired APD officers with 72 NEW POLICE OFFICERS (by year's end, there will be 19 more cops on "the beat" than there were before the 72 cops retired)

* Allentown has experienced a double-digit reduction in crime since Ed Pawlowski was elected Mayor -FBI Statistics

* New Police Contract that fixes the pension/retirement dilemma that crippled the APD in the past

* New Parks & Recreation Plan

* New Community Policing System

* New major bridge/street/road improvements

And Ed's just getting warmed up! So let's give Pawlowski another term as Mayor of Allentown!

For all the criticism, and some of his faults, there is one thing you can say about Ed Pawlowski:

HE IS TRYING

At the end of the day, he has tried to address the problems in Allentown, maybe he hasn't done as well as he could, but he did try.

There's always room for improvement, but I would like to point out that Bill Heydt was mayor for 8 years while the seeds of many of Allentown's problems were planted, took root, and spread.

I would like to ask "Superboy" Scott Armstrong where he was during the Heydt administration?

If he is so prescient and so smart, why wasn't he advising Heydt on how to prevent this?

Mayor Pawlowski has attempted to sit down with his critics. But they demanded that he do things THEIR way. He disagreed. So they are intent to sabotage any effort at any turn.

I don't like the perception of "pay to play", but I also don't think it is as extreme as they would have us believe.

Does Cityline Construction have too much of an inside line in Government? Who is to say.

The point is, no matter who the Mayor is, they will have to work with the money players in the city. There is no way around that.

I have shopped at Freeman's in downtown many times. I've also perused the other shops, and found an occasional item I wanted.
I was sorry to see Mananas and the Fed grill close, but the economy is what it is, and is as much an issue as the neighborhood environment itself.

I think Allentown could make a great comeback, I have met far too many people buying homes down there and rehabbing them to live in. I have been coming to a location in the vicinity of Cannon's bar regularly at night, after dark, for gatherings, and I have had no problems, seen no violence, nor heard any gunshots.
I'm sure it has happened, but not to the prevalence that some bloggers would have you believe. No more than any other community in these trying times. That's my two cents.

Oh, and I sign my name when I comment. Thank you for hearing me out.

Anonymous said...

Oh...my...God.

This explains a lot.

According to Wikipedia, Allentown's motto is, "Sic semper tyrannis," a Latin phrase meaning...

"thus, ever (or always), to tyrants."

Wha?!!

Mayor Pawlowski, without naming names (psst, 2 well-known tyrants are pictured at this blog's sidebar), how's about we change Allentown's MOTTO!!

Bill Villa said...

WOW. What a find, Foo Foo!

Mr. Mayor, we gotta start using the correct, longer version of this Latin phrase as Allentown's New & Improved Motto!

Not to be executed literally, of course not, but rather, employed as a "guideline" or say a warning for public officials and media power-broker types who get too arrogantly dug in at their fiefdoms.

I like it.

"Thus Always Death Comes To Tyrants."

It's really catchy.

Bill Villa said...

To re-cap, here's the shortened, "lazy Latin" phrase we're currently using as Allentown's motto:

"Sic semper tyrannis"

which when translated, means:

"thus, ever (or always), to tyrants."

Wha?!

In other words, "tyrants rule in Allentown, always!"

This motto's gotta go!

Instead, let's be "correctly Latin" and use this:

"Sic semper evello mortem tyrannis"

I know, I know, it's longer, but dig the not so subtle (duh!) change in meaning:

"Thus Always Death Comes To Tyrants."

Oh yeah. Much better.

Bill Villa said...

Chris Casey, thanks for checking in back there at 9:38am.

Not only is Pawlowski trying, he is LIVING in the heart of center cities. His kids walk to the neighborhood elementary school. Shootings and drug busts have happened within blocks from his home, so to suggest he doesn't have Allentown's best interests at heart is preposterous!
My personal favorite 'criticism' of the mayor is that he's 'from out of town.' He's been in the same house for 11 years, and THANK GOD he moved here post-Hess's, so he doesn't dwell on trying to take things back to those idyllic 60's (you know, when Allentown wasn't bothered with non-white immigrants and women had the good sense to be married and stay at home!)
Moving forward!

For what it is worth, I do always post anonymously, even though I am not really a person of interest. I'm afraid if certain bloggers sniff me out they'll come after my future kin.

Anonymous said...

Bill, Nice posting. Allentown is a great city. I think Mayor Pawlowski has done an outstanding job trying to improve the city. He deserves re election. It bothers me when clearly unthinking people bash the city. It is really unfair. Incidentally, I was born in Allentown. My parents lived in an apartment on N. 7th Street with my older sister and brother just before I was born at the Allentown Hospital in 1953. Several months prior to my birth they moved to Coplay, my Mom's home town. Pop is an Allentonian and a proud Allentown High grad. Best wishes to you in 2009. Bill Leiner Jr.

Bill Villa said...

Anon 1:41, your comment really brings things "home" regarding our Mayor. Ed Pawlowski doesn't live in South Whitehall Township. Or Nazareth. He walks the walk and lives in Center City Allentown. I say shut up to all magpie naysayers who don't live within a few blocks of Mayor Pawlowski. Enough Monday Morning quarterbacking and sniper fire from the trees already. When they can attract more than 3% of the vote maybe we'll listen to their vision.

Lehigh County Commissioner Bill Leiner Jr., great hearing from you "front channel." I must however, um, "share the credit" with Mrs. Dottie on this post since she wrote it (okay I edited it a little). You and I share a birth year. And of course a party, the "good guys," I'm (only half) kidding. Best wishes to you in '09 as well. Thanks again for visiting "Lehigh Valley Somebody" and don't be a stranger.

Just so you know, the way you think & write makes you a person of interest here and anonymously is fine. We also understand your stalking/harassment concerns. One of the edits I made to Mrs. Dottie's text was to remove the name of my sister's store on Hamilton Street in Downtown Allentown. Thanks to all for commenting. I'd like to address the idea of nostalgia, since I am a retro nut and a collector of memorabilia, chachka from the past, and I value senior citizens. I miss Hess's and Leh's too. I've been here since the 80's and remember shopping downtown. Bill has lived here all his life, and his dad worked at Hess's. His family is featured in the documentary, dining at The Patio. I think it's fine to look back, and to learn from the past, but it is also important to reach out to the people who live here now, maybe they have different cultural values, but I think we can learn from one another and live together, moving forward.

If you look at all the thriving small businesses recently opened on 7th St, you can see that these shops serve the needs of the community. There are lots of barber shops because there is a demand for that. Most people seem to be working really hard to make a living.

I keep hearing that Allentown is a "sinking ship." Gee, that's a nice attitude to have about our city. I think there are some people who need to be thrown overboard so Allentown can move forward.

Bill Villa said...

Re: throwing people overboard in the name of Moving Forward Together (and what a great concept by Mrs. Dottie), I'd like to nominate our tyrant DA Jim Martin.

Let's (hiccup) dunk Martin, next election.

He's dead weight (and lots of it) and he can't get along with anybody. Let's all Move Forward Together on this one. In your hearts, you all know I'm right about Jumbo Jimbo.

It's good to see others talking positively about A-town, FOR A CHANGE. Today's A-town definitely looks NOTHING like it did back "in the day" but neither does AMERICA, as a whole. I have been preaching it from day one, the only way Allentown will move forward is for the "powers that be" to gain the trust of the people and the only that will happen is if they gain an UNDERSTANDING of the people. I bump into the Villas every time I am out, it seems and they can testify that Allentown is NOWHERE near as bad as many claim it is. We have our problems and issues but nothing that is incurable. Unfortunately, propaganda is alive and well in Atown and that may be its' worse enemy.

Bill Villa said...

Hey Alfonso, Mrs. Dottie and I were looking for you today while lunching at Deli Plaza (dee-lish as always!) but the front window was frosted-over so no spotting activist pally's strolling by. Anon 6:57, cool, thanks, and hey, I'm a "people person." I'm all for working with what's there and finding common ground. But Jim Martin alienates everybody. And everybody knows that. My favorite Allentown spots are the parks - not the big glorious ones we all know about like West Park or Cedar Beach or the Rose Gardens - but the smaller "pocket" parks throughout the city. I'm hoping that as the city continues to grow and change more pocket parks are planned. My two favorites, especially when I'm babysitting are the spray parks at 5th and Allen and at Bucky Boyle park. Whenever we're there I wish such awesome playgrounds had existed when I was a child (although when I was a kid there were still Timbertowns in the Lehigh Valley, I suppose its a fair trade).

Also, its accross the bridge from downtown, but Double Decker Records, on the corner at St. John & S. 8th Street is widely considered to be one of the best independent record stores in the country, not only by LV locals but by record collectors everywhere. When touring bands come through and play the LV or just crash at our house that is the first place they want to go the next morning. Sometimes they save their earnings for weeks in anticipation of all the "gems" they will find at this Allentown store.

I followed your link to the 7th street bustle piece, and I was disgusted by the blatant racism directed at a segment of Allentown's population.
The most recent figures on Wikipedia show allentown's Hispanic population at 25%.
How anyone can mock small businesses that cater to a population to me is sheer stupidity on their part.
I have composed an email to Mr. Kranzley asking him to address those comments.
I don't want them removed, what I want is for the Morning Call to condemn them.
The Morning Call reporter actually wrote a fairly objective piece about legitimate businesses and their positive contribution to the city. It is a shame that the remarks in the comment section have been allowed to put a dark shadow on a piece that dispels negative connotations about the Queen City.

Angie Villa said...

Chris,

This is why I have my disclaimer regarding Blogger Tuesday, because I do not want to be linked to the racist hate that they allow there at the Morning Call Forum.
Wish more bloggers would take a stand against it. I think it is damaging to the community. Seems like the hate has become acceptable because not too many people speak out against it. It just festers and grows. THat's not right. Where are our city councilors on this matter?

Oh, and bravo to Pete Lewnes who works very hard as 7th Street Manager

Bill Villa said...

Chris, all the best to you in your endeavors to get even a response back from The Morning Call "newspaper's" Minister Of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, Glenn Kranzley.

As you may know, The Morning Call Editorial Board, at The Morning Call's website, boasts of having a "Welcome Mat" that is "always out for anyone who wants to be heard."

I've politely requested a "Welcome Mat" meeting with Glenn Kranzley and TMC Editorial Board 217 times over the past year and a half.

I "want to be heard" on some things related to my daughter Sheena's homicide, DA Jim Martin's handling of the case, and The Morning Call's coverage (or lack thereof) of DA Jim Martin's handling of the case and another highly suspicious DUI homicide case of September 2007.

Glenn Kranzley's only answer so far, after 217 requests to meet?

Here's all he has said to me: "No thanks."

I enthusiastically nominate Glenn Kranzley as a guy to throw overboard, to facilitate Allentown Moving Forward Together.

"Sic semper evello mortem tyrannis."

Thus Always Death Comes To Tyrants.

Crony tyrants like Glenn Kranzley and Jim Martin.

Let's give them both the heave-ho overboard, ASAP.

Chris, keep us posted.

There was a time, not that long ago, when nearly ALL of our local bloggers were protesting, and posting, LOUDLY, against The Morning Call Forum and its vile racism, homophobia, anti- Semitism, misogyny, and overall hatred.

But then "Blogger Tuesday" at The Morning Call was invented, many of these same local bloggers started being published in The Morning Call FORUM, and all protest against The Forum, like magic, went POOF.

I heard rumors of a happy place in blogger-land.....

I have another downtown gem to celebrate: Grace Montessori School!
In the most unexpected of places(the first floor of a parking garage) a bustling, wonderful, loving space. It is affordable for those lucky enough to afford it (less expensive than lots of downtown daycare sites, and definitely less than most suburban preschools) and for those who can't, an amazing financial aid program that underscores Grace's mission of social justice.
My daughter walks or rides her bike to school every day - we love it!

Bill Villa said...

Welcome, citymom, really neat to hear that "happy rumors" are circulating about this blog. Mrs. Dottie/Angie and I visited Grace Montesorri when we were looking for a pre-K for Gianni and we were very, very impressed. While we ended up opting for the Jewish Community Center (heck, nothing beats Jewish mothers, whether you're Jewish or not, and we're not, but we wish we were), it was a tough decision. Since then we've met lots of parents who love Grace Montessori (and the JCC naturally) but the topic is Downtown Allentown, and YES, isn't it nice to know there's a great gem of a school in that "unlikely" place in Downtown Allentown to attend, and celebrate. Neato. Thanks for reminding all of us!

Dottie, good to hear from you. I love this city. The work being done on 7th Street is slowly changing that corridor. Much of it is the work of one Peter Lewnes but I know others have their hands in that pot as well. Volunteers, city officials and merchants are making that happen. There is still a long way to go, but remembering what it was like 3 years ago is stunning.

As much as I love the city, I recognize her faults. Still much to do...

The success of our revitalization will not be the work of politicians or officials: it will be the work of her citizens who fight everyday to improve their neighborhoods.

Any word back on the cesspool of hate Morning Call "Forum" from Morning Call Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda Glenn Kranzley?

Readers, wanted to share this with you. It's an excerpt from an email I received recently from the managing editor of a PA newspaper much smaller than The Morning Call which has won many awards for its (non-puppy-related) investigative journalism. This fine newspaper is one of many PA newspapers keeping their eye on the increasingly curious story of The Morning Call refusing to meet with a grieving father who has "excellent questions that deserve to be answered" about DA Jim Martin.

----------

"Personally, I don't see the point of not meeting with you - up here we meet with people all the time that we may not agree with and may not be able to help. At its most Machiavellian, doing so allows us to take the high road and prevents PR nightmares like the one you are currently conducting. It costs some time and no small amount of aggravation on our part, but in the long run that's preferable... and sometimes we discover we do agree on some things, and we actually can help on others. However, I am not in a position to tell other newsrooms how to conduct their business."

From The Morning Call's website:

"... the [Morning Call Editorial] board intends to be as open with readers as possible. It meets regularly -- a few times every week -- with people and groups about topics of public interest. The Lehigh Valley area is blessed to have public-spirited citizens who recognize that the newspaper is a corporate citizen that strives to be engaged in the debate on such issues, and that tries to offer leadership. The welcome mat always is out for those who want to be heard." -Morning Call Editorial Board

Machiavelli was a piker compared to God-complex Glenn Kranzley and The Morning Call. They, quite simply, don't give a shit about anything except their own paychecks and protecting their political and corporate buddies' paychecks. Period.

Oh My Word!

what a great post...greater comments and great people commenting! The Deli Plus and the owners are just my new favorite people...such positive attitudes and so happy to be included with the Chensters...it's my new favorite place to stop in on when in that part of Hamilton. Seriously though...I could not have been any happier with Tyronne Richardson's article this past Sunday...the comments were horrible but I can still remember the time when I couldn't get any nice comments about 7th...it all started when a few committed people got together to follow a DCED plan called Main Street...now it has a community of merchants and residents fueling the progress and hopefully taking much more ownership this year. Coming from immigrant parents that worked like heck to bring a better life for my sister and I...I look at what's happened on this street as the American Dream of getting the slice of the pie...a mostly hispanic community saw the opportunity and grabbed it. There has also been a great synergy of community groups like OAPA and Old Fairgrounds not to mention the current Hamilton Street revitalization efforts...when people roll up their sleeves to make a difference...watch out! On another topic...I got a call from Old Allentown asking if the Chen Arts group would be intersted in another art show during their next house tour...time to start planning :)

"Lehigh Valley Somebody" in FIRST PLACE among Lehigh Valley blogs, well ahead of #12 (!) and #14 (!)

The cream always rises to the top.

Read it and weep, fellas.

Bill Villa said...

Readers, we'll have a new post coming soon on the topic of Sanctioned Hatred at The Morning Call Forum.

It's guaranteed to cause more weeping and "anonymous" (wink wink) threats so hold on to your hats.

Hopefully, it will also force The Morning Call to make REGISTRATION REQUIRED for comment participation at its Forum-- as is required at The Morning Call's "Sounding Board" feature.

This would reduce "hate speech" at the Forum considerably and maybe even eliminate it completely, since people are less inclined to reveal their personal evil pathology if they are required to use their real name.

I tried asking Glenn Kranzley about this "Registration Required" thing back in August, when Glenno was visiting a local blog looking for "feedback," but Kranzley ignored my excellent question, and Kranzley's ignoring of me was greatly facilitated by the hosting blog's author who helpfully muzzled me and dispatched me in short order so Kranzley could avoid addressing my excellent question.

More on all this coming soon, stay tuned ...

Hi, I'm following the flow to the topic of the Morning Call and want to share my exchange with them over the past couple of days. You don't have to post - it is kind of long!

"Hello,

I am writing to the paper as a mother, stepmother, and concerned resident of Allentown. My adolescent stepdaughter was doing research for a school paper on internet communication, which led her to the comment sections of many of your newspaper stories. Needless to say, as a child of partial Hispanic heritage, she was devastated. We reported abuse on several comments which were not removed. I have known of and heard about the racist, ignorant comments on the morning call site, but I have now seen first hand how it can affect young individuals. I ask you to speak to your editor, to consider the number of relevant, intelligent comments attached to your articles, and consider the impact of these words on the children of Allentown. Or, as they are known in your reader forums: Animals, stinkin' ricans, pork chops, bean eaters, pieces of trash. It is disgusting!

my name
Allentonian"

First response
"Dear Ms. ,

I will certainly pass your comments along to our online editors. I apologize that your daughter found these comments while visiting The Morning Call’s Web site. We are aware that such comments do get posted on our site. Unfortunately, an outside vendor is responsible for the posting – and the removal -- of comments. I tell you this, not because I am saying that we are not responsible, but to explain why it takes time for such comments to be removed. I am sorry that they are not always removed from the site in a timely fashion – and I agree that these are unacceptable.

Sincerely,

Vicki Mayk

Director, Community Relations & Communications

The Morning Call

vicki.mayk@mcall.com

610-820-6719"

I then received an email from Mr Williams:
"

"Ms. , can I ask to what articles you refer? Unfortunately, your complaint is very, very common. We seem to have people who just want to start trouble, and it’s difficult to control. What we will do is find the comments and pass on the user name to the vendor, who will ban them and warn them. But in all honesty, on today’s Web, it’s very hard to keep such people off the site. There are ways around any blocks.

We’re very sorry for your stepdaughter having to see this. I think we all realize the people who make such comments are the people who have real problems, but that doesn’t make the effect of what they say any easier to take. We will do all we can to address this particular case. We can hope that this person will realize the hurt they can cause by saying such disgusting things.

Ted Williams

Themorningcall.com"

I also just today received a postage paid mailing from the MCall to entice me to receive the paper at home. I wrote that i would, as soon as they address this issue. I encourage you all to do the same!!!

Bill Villa said...

Anon 1:32, thank you very much for commenting.

I'm sensing some "progress" ... or possibly a vulnerability ... at The Morning Call on this Forum/Hate issue.

Not that long ago, the "newspaper" dispathced Morning Call columnist BILL WHITE to our local blogosphere with this breezy explanation for the hatred at The Morning Call Forum: it sells.

"The tremendous traffic on our Web site is a selling point for advertisers and future subscribers. And the comments, warts and all, attract a lot of those clicks." -Morning Call columnist Bill White

... quoted in the kind of local blog reporting we just don't see around these parts anymore, since "Valley Blogosphere" and "Blogger Tuesday" were invented by Glenn Kranzley and Bernie O'Hare ...

Anonymous said...

"Anonymous" (wink wink) continues to "carry water" for the same Morning Call he used to condemn in the pre-Blogger Tuesday good old days. What happened? One word: "aquiver."

"The tremendous traffic on our Web site is a selling point for advertisers and future subscribers. And the comments, warts and all, attract a lot of those clicks." -Morning Call columnist Bill White

It should be noted that this exact same "tremendous traffic" at The Morning Call's website that attracts advertisers is what got local bloggers (present company excluded) all "aquiver" at the possibility of reaching this "tremendous traffic" with their blog ramblings.

Overnight, the HATRED at The Morning Call Forum (which Valley Blogosphere and Blogger Tuesday were now linked to) well .. um .. wasn't all that much of a big deal anymore. Pure Genius.

Here's a tip since you geniuses haven't figured it out by now - the fact that you put up statements like this means you read what I sent you. That's good enough for me. I don't put anything for the public because I know you'll quash it (as you do all who don't bow to your altar), I put it up so you'll read it.

Thanks for all the confirmations!

Now you can go back to posting all these messages yourselves. Feel free to throw in one of these "velvet rope" posts once in awhile so you look important to each other. I would have said readers, but you don't have any that aren't named Villa, tool or robot.

In the last 120 hours, there has been a total of 3 comments at Memory Lane, coincidentally, the same percentage of votes he got (3) in the 2005 Allentown Mayoral election where Pawlowski garnered a whopping 59% mandate.

POOF. Well done. Who falls next?

Excellent Question That Deserves To Be Answered:

It's very likely that DA Jim Martin and Glenn Kranzley and The Morning Call have been greatly enjoying O'Hare and his henchmen's attempts to sabotage Bill Villa's efforts to prove a conspiracy between Martin and The Morning Call regarding some suspicious DUI homicide deaths in Lehigh County.

My excellent question is: have they been paying O'Hare for his efforts? In either money or other "access" favors?

It seems unlikely to me that O'Hare would do everything he has done to try to undermine Mr. Villa solely "for fun."

Angie Villa said...

Does "Lehigh Valley Somebody" have the most astute commenters in our local blogosphere or what? ;D

O'Hare's "troll fighter" stance is a total smoke-screen. His real agenda is helping Martin & Kranzley avoid Villa's heat is how I've alsways seen it. And his loyal dunce henchmen have been duped just the same as his readers have been duped by him. Well, those few remaining readers I shoukd say.

That claim is false." -B. O'Hare, posting as "himself" at Lehigh Valley Lies & Ramifications

O'Hare, there is no doubt in anyone's mind that that "anonymous" (wink wink) comment was made by you. It's the same claim you've made publicly before, it is off topic, is a personal attack, and is made by someone using AOL as an ISP. In other words, it's you. Gotcha (again), oopsie.
