Media Consolidation

I've noticed that the Morning Call has written a story in it's local news section about a new PBS 39 documentary on Allentown.

http://www.mcall.com/news/local/all-pbsdocumentary.6288182mar02,0,2528497.story

Should a newspaper be promoting the viewpoint of the producers and writers at a local TV station? Well the MC is featured in this documentary. I just watched the documentary and it was clearly a positive promo piece about the history of Allentown and it's bright future "out of the shadows and into the spotlight." This report in the "local news" section made me think about the possibility of the merging of our local paper with a local tv station. Could be a kinda cozy relationship for some area big shots.

Bush's FCC has lifted restrictions on cross-ownership so now local tv stations can buy up local radio stations and newspapers. This is really important and scary stuff. Bill Moyer's did a show on this topic, but for the most part I believe this has been kept kinda hush hush by the MSM. Please read about it here : http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/12/03/media_consolidation/

(Note: this was written in early december before the new FCC rule was passed)

Here's a report on the new FCC rule from Dec. 18th, 2007 http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/18/business/18cnd-fcc.html?8br

This new rule was passed in a hurry, in Dec. before Christmas, before coverage of the primaries, and without much of an opportunity for the public to respond. In 2003, when the FCC tried to do this there was a public outcry and the plan was killed. I believe that FCC Chairman Kevin Martin was under orders from the Bush Admin. to keep the public out of this decision as much as possible.

What's scary about this is that at a local level this merging of media removes incentive for competition and high quality local news coverage. What will happen in cities where bilingual newspapers and tv shows bring minority issues to the forefront? What about women's issues? I believe democracy is at risk if we do not have several independent, diverse voices in the media. What's next, strict control of the internet and muzzling of bloggers?

Clearchannel has a lot of control over what music we hear on the radio, so I hope we don't lose our local community member supported radio station WDIY http://www.wdiyfm.org/. The choices for quality radio stations are dwindling. WDIY is a radio station that actually plays music by local artists, and has a variety of different shows hosted by community members. The music is multi-cultural and diverse.

It seems like when the blogs criticize the local newspaper, city government officials, or their policies, there appears to be an increase in positive promotional puffery from the local MSM. Just coincidence? Maybe. While Amy Burkett (from PBS 39's "Tempo") and the mayor are optimistic about the bright future and rebirth of Allentown, there are long time merchants struggling and stores closing on Hamilton St.

I wonder if the newspaper will be reporting on that as well. I'd like to have a rosy attitude like Amy too, but like Ronald Reagan said "trust but verify."

last night I watched Channel 39's documentary on Allentown. They had done an excellent job on both the previous Bethlehem Steel and Hess's projects. The last segment of the new program was most disturbing. Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski referred to redeveloping center city, 70 to 80 square blocks. He apparently thinks our problems are with buildings, as opposed to people. I'm not sure being mugged in front of a new building is much consolation to a crime victim.

I enjoyed the Hess's documentary and my husband and his family are actually in the old footage of the Patio.

I thought this new doc. moved too fast and seemed like purely propaganda.I do enjoy seeing old footage of parades and stuff but overall I was bored through most of it. The writing was kinda corny. They did not even mention the city's segregation of the black people.

Yes, this is exactly where things are heading, if we allow it ...

Hi Dottie. The problem is that there are so many shopping malls everywhere you turn, who wants to go downtown and spend 10 minutes just finding a place to park?
I will bet you that a lot of the locals don't even shop there. They hop on the LANTA bus and head to the malls. Also, and most important, You seem to have this Bush kick thing, be it NCLB, or anything else "R" related. Well, I guess you havent read the Morning Call or any other newspaper. Bush will be gone in short order. I don't like him either. But your complants about channel 39, and the Morning Call and others being G Bush's fault is just a reflection on your own biased and one sided and sometimes lacking opinion. I am sorry Dotty, but complaining that it is Gdubya's fault just isn't going to work anymore.

First of all, I'm not complaining, you are. I'm raising some questions. The point of this post is to draw attention to media consolidation and how it can have a negative impact on democracy and freedom of speech. And how this could happen at a local level. You are really missing the point by calling me biased. I try to be non-partisan, vote for the candidate not the party, and even quote Ronald Reagan at the end of my post. I voted for several local R's. I say "Bush's FCC" because he appointed Colin Powell's son as the head of the FCC and tried to make drastic changes in 2003. Public outcry and Congress stopped it from happening then. (read the article I linked to) This issue is not a dem or repub. issue. It's one that all Americans should be concerned about.

I agree. An ever-shrinking number of media outlet owners is bad for all of us, whether the owner is a right-wing lunatic W-Monger like Rupert Murdoch or those really nice and way smarter and much better-looking charismatic people at MSNBC and Air America.

Like Keith Olberman, he is... simply charming

I clicked on that salon link, it was a short paragraph with another link that would not open unless you sign up for a membership. $$

Yeah, there's got to be more choices. We are a diverse people.

And why can't more news anchors look like George Clooney? It seems like there is a double standard, and most female reporters look like spokesmodels while the guys, well.....

Brit Hume looks like George Clooney wouldn't you say? No but seriously, there are exceptions to your female reporters gotta look like spokesmodels theory ... but I wouldn't be so sexist or judgmental as to name any (okay I'll name one, Candy Crowley; Brit Hume's cuter than her).

"Dottie said...Yeah, there's got to be more choices. We are a diverse people."" Thats what blogs are for, they are free.. so far. How can someone start a new newspaper in this day and age. It would cost millions just to buy the equiptment, let alone hire employees.

I thought the PBS documentary was awful, I barely made it through it. It was really just propaganda for all of Allentown's best known wealthy families.

Susan,

Thanks for commenting, and I agree!!
