A Teachable Moment

Yesterday, I took our 7 year-old son to a small playground to climb monkey bars, run around, and make movies with his cool camera that "Nee-Nee and Pappy" bought for him. When we arrived, there was not a soul around, and I was anticipating a relaxing respite of basking in the afternoon sunshine in a quiet space.

When I went to sit down on a bench, I noticed a bird had gotten its one leg stuck between the wooden slots of the bench and was flailing around trying to get free. The bird's leg was wedged very tightly and was bleeding.

I tried, unsuccessfully, to free the bird's leg by using a small stick. I knew I could not just leave this bird there to die, while the crows and the hawks waited in the trees above licking their bird lips. I tried pouring some water between the slots of wood. That didn't work. So who do I call?

I called the Humane Society, and they told me they don't deal with wildlife rescue. They referred me to "Helping Hands" in the Poconos. They referred me to a woman who rescues eagles, and her husband told me there is no one locally who could help me and that I should try to help the bird myself. He instructed me to grab the bird with my hands and pour dishwashing liquid between the slots of the bench and the bird's leg would slip free. Well, just as I was about to get some soap (I had some hand wash in my car), a park maintenance man pulled up to empty the trash cans. I showed him the trapped bird and he went back to his truck and got a screwdriver. He was able to loosen the slots on the bench so the bird could free its leg and finally fly away into a nearby tree! Thank you!
I felt good that I did not leave the bird there to die. Our son felt good too. For me, there is a deeper meaning to this story than just helping a poor, trapped little birdie. I think it was a teachable moment which I used to show my child that there can be good results in life if you try to help. You can always figure out ways to help a living creature that's trapped because you care. The care you give to a helpless bird (or ... puppy) can also be extended to humans who are suffering. Yep.

Life can be really cruel, and sometimes people find themselves trapped, like the little bird with a bloody leg-- who would not stop fighting for his (or her) life. We shouldn't be afraid to do what we can do to help, if we believe that is the right thing to do-- even if there are menacing crows and hawks hovering, ready to pounce and devour.

Hi Alfonso, I like to think this is true. Do you ever wonder why bad deeds go "unnoticed?" i.e. why people pretend they don't notice them so they don't have to do anything about them?

villa daughter was a mess and he can't come to grips with his awful parenting. his bitterness is a reflection of his disgust with the mess of a daughter he created and now wishes to blame on the rest of the world because he and his wife failed to properly do their jobs. they are two of legions of irresponsible parents who are, sadly, forced to live with their own incompetence. i've had enough of their blaming everybody but themselves. no guts. lots of blame. they are poster nuts for why society is going down the toilet: parents who unleash disaterous consequences on the society. in this case, karma bit them hard and they must look in the mirror someday and properly assess blame on themselves. until then, the pathetic charade continues. i don't particularly like or agree with bernie o'hare. i rip him regularly for his views (and sometimes the tone with which they're expressed). at least bernie has the guts to own his shortcomings, the villas will never and will die bitter failures who were made to pay for their mistakes while living. it's a shitty life, but it's the one they so richly deserve.

Readers, the previous comment was originally published by Bernie O'Hare at his "Troll Parade" blog on 9/29/08.

Sheena's family has requested repeatedly that this wildly inaccurate and sadistically cruel comment be removed from O'Hare's "Troll Parade" blog.

O'Hare refuses to remove it.

As two commenters at our previous post noted:

"Wow. Even The Morning Call/Topix removes offsensive comments from its Forum when someone from the general public complains. And yet O'Hare refuses Sheena's family's (!) request to remove that awful comment about Sheena?" Anonymous, Fri Apr 10, 09:29:00 AM 2009

"What possible rationale justifies leaving that disgusting comment up there? "Free Speech?" "Rebecca's Pocket" blog "ethics?" Please. This is sadistic cruelty, pure and simple, and criminal harassment. That comment serves no legitimate purpose and remains up there only to punish and provoke and intimidate." Readers, this is an example of a "bad deed" going "unnoticed," i.e. people are pretending they don't notice it so they don't have to do anything about it.

Why is this, do you think?

I believe people have become de-sensitized, meaning many no longer care or want to get involved with those who seek help or need assistance. It's either too time consuming, too expensive, or just too hard to try to help your fellow man out nowadays. I often am called crazy for stopping to help people who I see are stranded on the side of the road or in a rain shower. I still give people money if they ask for it. (smile) I believe that is what we as HUMAN beings are SUPPOSED to do.

Alfonso, because you notice and stop to help people caught "in a rain shower" (smile) ...

we imagine you've now noticed the shit storm of sadistic cruelty that is the awful "Troll Parade" comment about Sheena Villa and her family that Bernie O'Hare refuses to take down.

And we couldn't agree w/ you more that helping is what humans are supposed to do.

Q. Will you be "stopping to help" us? (smile)

It is astonishing that The Morning Call provides a link at its website to O'Hare's hate-filled "Troll Parade" blog via LV Ramblings.

Villas (congrats on being #1 again this week) while i do "get" the metaphor (wink wink) of this blog post but somehow i don't see you as "trapped little birdies" in need of rescuing. i see you more like this as snake killers (not a threat). My theory is that people don't rush to your aide because they know you don't need any help because your blog battles are such one-sided blowout victories as it is. Maybe act more helpless (?) and preferably by the side of a road and in a rain shower (smile).

It's funny, but the only time I ever hear about the troll parade on my blog perusals is at YOUR blog.

We choose to not pretend like we don't notice it ... like everyone else does. If O'Hare perpetrated his "Troll Parade" blog against you, your family, and your deceased daughter, maybe you'd understand. But obviously, you don't. FYI, we will be bringing these people to justice.

The "Troll Parade" blog was, incredibly, originally created by Attorney (for now) David C. Najarian, Lynn Township Supervisor.

He called it "Bills and Trolls."

Its (futile) purpose was to intimidate and muzzle me so I would shut up about DA Jim Martin and The Morning Call. In this regard, it has been a dismal and total failure.

Soon realizing his legal jeopardy, or, more likely, after having it pointed out to him by a more competent lawyer, Najarian deleted his "Bills and Trolls" blog within a week. But Bernie O'Hare took attorney (for now) Najarian's original content and installed it at his new "Troll Parade" blog w/ Najarian's liability intact.

Currently, The Morning Call "newspaper" links to "The Troll Parade" blog and that comment about my deceased daughter Sheena that O'Hare refuses to delete.

Also up there at The Morning Call-affiliated Troll Parade Blog:

O'Hare's and Najarian's public, written plottings, and threats > to sabatoge my daughter Sheena's wrongful death litigation.

Nice guys, eh?

My Take...

Bernie O'Hare is a disgraced ex-lawyer who is barred from practicing law because of his lying. Out here in blogistan, or over breakfast w/ Glenn Kranzley, it's easy for him to bamboozle everyone. In front of a judge and a jury, not so much. O'Hare's speed these days is being a grandstanding buffoon (and a pest) in front of Allentown City Council. w/ your track record, I'm sure you'll crush him.

Over & Out...

I won't link to any local bloggers who link to O'Hare and his Troll Parade.
