2009 World Champion New York Yankees

Last night, Major League Baseball's best team, the New York Yankees (103-59) beat baseball's 2nd best team, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (97-65) to capture their 40th American League pennant.

LVS predicts the Yankees will sweep past the Phillies (93-69) and onto their unprecedented (in all of sports) 27th World Championship in 6 games or less.

The New York Yankees of the American League have won 26 World Series championships, the most (by far) of any Major League Baseball franchise and exactly one quarter of all World Series titles won to date-- and for Yankees fans, 25% isn't nearly frequently enough; we'd prefer 100%.

The St. Louis Cardinals of the (not as good) National League have won 10 World Series championships, which is the second-most (and 10 vs 26 is a really really far and distant 2nd-most) among major league baseball teams.

The Yankees and Phillies have met in the World Series just one time, in 1950, which resulted in an Easy 'N Breezy 4 game (to 0) sweep by the Yankees, who were en route to winning an unprecedented (and still unmatched) 5 World Series in a row from 1949 to 1953.

Most recently, the unparalleled and peerless New York Yankees won 3 World Series in a row ('98, '99, '00), and they creamed the Atlanta Braves in '96.

Congratulations to LVS for your unprecedented and peerless 44th week in a row as the #1 Best Blog in Pennsylvania.

The Phillies should consider forfeiting ...

Villas, just the facts here again as usual, in that regard you're both as reliable as Derek Jeter.

My Take...

Yankees in 5.

Over & Out...

I've heard the Yankees paid for their new $1.5 Billion stadium out of petty cash, true?

The Angels would pulverize the Phillies. So would the Red Sox, Twins, and Tigers for that matter. Phils have no chance against the Yankees, zero.

Well, our experiment w/ taking our Comment Moderation "Off" seems to be working okay (it's back "On" now), we'll take it "Off" again soon. What can I say, Yankee fans, we're #1.

It's neat to see the Yankee Logo and Sheena's picture lined up side by side on this blog. Sheena was a Yankee fan and went to many games with her dad and brother Patrick. I feel fortunate to have been given Sheena's Yankee shirts to wear to the games that we attend now with Gianni. It's a really fun family tradition. My grandfather was a HUGE Yankee fan too. Go Yanks!

I cried last night when Mariano struck out Gary Mathews Jr. Anon 10:18 is right, the Yankees should win the World Series every year and Yankees fans have waited much too long for number 27. Glad it's the Phillies, that is, it'll be a really easy one like 1950.

Bill Villa said...

3:39, I cried too, and I agree that the Yankees should win the World Series every year.

In 1995, beloved Yankee Paul O’Neill flipped Sheena Villa a batting practice ball in right field before a game. Actually, O’Neill pulled himself up on the right field wall and handed the ball to Sheena after Sheena had dropped O’Neill’s first two soft tosses. Sheena was a terrific dancer. Patrick Villa has some 1990’s Yankee infield dirt that was graciously scooped up for him by a groundskeeper and Patrick also has Yankee Hall of Famer Phil “Scooter” Rizzuto’s autograph on a baseball hat. Holy Cow. On August 10, 2005, about a month shy of his 5th birthday, Gianni Villa became the youngest Villa to ever attend a game at Yankee Stadium.

My dad took me to my first game at Yankee Stadium on opening day, April 12, 1966. The Yanks lost a nifty pitcher's duel between Whitey Ford and Mickey Lolich, 2-1. Dig the lineups, here's the boxscore.

Anonymous said...

I agree totally that the Yanks should win the World Series every year.

Bill, who's your all-time favorite Yankee?

Angie Villa said...

My fave is Derek Jeter ;D

Bill Villa said...

(Jeter, really, I did not know that :) well, "my era" goes back a ways, and for me, my fave will always be "The Mick" who was the Greatest Clutch Hitter (from both sides of the plate) who ever played the game.

Bill, I always enjoy your sense of humor! You too Angie! Yanks in six games or less? Definitely. And it's funny that Phils fans think they have a chance.
I, too, am happy the Yanks made it to the Series after not being there since 2003. That just wasn't right. And isn't it great to see A-ROD playing like A-ROD in the post season! He will no doubt finish his career as the best of all time, except for Ruth. Here's my prediction: Phillies will falter. Yank bullpen will make the difference, Mariano Rivera already being the best closer of all time. The Angels were awesome, but sadly, no match for the 2009 Bombers.

MOst Vital Stat: Ryan Howard, against left-handers, at home, has one (1) home run ... and a .107 batting average. CC Sabathia will lower that, I am certain.

Where's Cookie Rojas, Don Money and Chris Short when you need them :) GO YANKS!

Bill Villa said...

I heard that Ryan Howard stat last night, wow, talk about an Achilles Heel.

Btw, I have tickets for Game 6.

Jealous?

(I wish they were for Game 4 ;)

Foo Foo said...

I'm jealous but it'll probably be over after 4 games (oopsie).

Anonymous said...

Maybe 3 games ...

The City Official said...

(OT, Mea Culpa) Love your New & Improved sidebar content, all very worthy 'n deserving additions (YANKS in 4).

Bill Villa said...

Merci. I'm hoping the Yanks "toy" w/ the Phillies for 6 games (let them win 2).

Anonymous said...

I predict A-Rod homers at least once every game, maybe twice ...

The City Official said...

I would not bet against that ...

Anonymous said...

A-Rod is under paid.

Anonymous said...

I agree, for what he produces he's a bargain.

Joshua T said...

Bill & Angie, who do you think the Yankees will beat in the 2010 World Series?

Bill Villa said...

I'm thinking the Cardinals.

Angie Villa said...

The Dodgers losing to the Yankees in 2010 would be cool ...

That's your Ultra Glamour Match-Up, Dodgers/Yankees.

Yankees in World Series Good For Baseball

Anonymous said...

Oopsie ...

Bill Villa said...

Yankees in World Series definitely good for baseball (and for all of mankind) but we cannot condone sophomoric taunts against the "Frillies" from the goofy New York Post, no matter how increasingly hysterical these taunts will likely get as the Yankees win the World Series in 6 games or less. We're just not like that ...

tbagshaw said...

Come on Bill where's the old hometown spirit. I mean don't the Phillies deserve a chance???

Bill Villa said...

Sure, they deserve a chance :)

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT'S DUE DEPARTMENT

Hey, Game 1, Cliff Lee was spectacular.

"You've got to tip your hat to their guy," Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland said of Lee. "That's probably the best pitching performance against us we've seen all year."

Yanks in 6 games or less.

Anonymous said...

Very classy of the Yankees and LVS to graciously acknowledge the National Leaguers "W" last evening in the Bronx.

Bill Villa said...

(Merci) hey the Yankees can't win 'em ALL.

We are semi-pleased however w/ winning the MOST (40 AL pennants, 26 World Series).

And #27 is coming in 6 games or less, stay tuned.

YANKS
YANK
GAME 2 AWAY FROM THE PHILLIES
3-1

Yankees Manager Joe Girardi made all the right brilliant moves last night. Molina for Posada. Hairston for Swisher. Gardner for Hairston. Posada for Molina. Nice to see the Bombers bomb two into the right field seats. Mo like the 2009 Yankees we (all) know and love. And all that bush league cocky swagger from Cliff Lee means nuthin'.

Series tied, 1-1.

And Cliff Lee bats in Philly.

Oopsie.

Angie Villa said...

Coverage from Yankees.com ;D

GO YANKEES!!!

Bill Villa said...

YANKS SPANK FRILLIES IN GAME 3
8-5

Now this is Mo like it. Down 3-0 to the adorably cute-named ("Cole," "Shane," "Chase") and Amish facial-haired Frillies, the Yankees do what the Yankees do: WIN. Homers by A-Rod, Swisher, and a pinch homer from Godzilla Matsui who actually had the night off. Featuring an all-time post season leading 17th victory for Andy Pettitte who also singled and drove in (and scored) a run (oopsie). Yanks showing Philly why Philly is Philly and why New York is New York. It's half over. Yanks in 6.

Anonymous said...

Nice series for Ryan Howard so far :)

Bill Villa said...

The pitching (on both sides) has been phenomenal but the Yankees pitching has been better. Ditto the hitting. That's why the Yanks are up 2-1 and will be up 3-1 after tonite. I predict ... the Yanks will bomb the Phils in Game 4 tonite ... Phils squeak one out to stay alive on Monday night ... Yanks end it on Wednesday night back in New York, w/ me sitting in Section 1.

My favorite Yankee is #42 Mariano Rivera. In my opinion the greatest relief pitcher of all time. GO YANKEES!!!!!!

Bill Villa said...

JR, you're the humblest superstar we know :)

and it's a FACT, Rivera's the best closer, all-time, w/ nobody even a close second.

Very much like how nobody's a close 2nd to the Yankees in World Championships.

Yankees: 26 (going on 27) World Series WINS.

Real Distant 2nd Place: only 10 for the Cardinals

YANKS SHUT UP PHILS IN GAME 4
7-4
TAKE COMMANDING 3-1 LEAD

Wow, whatta gutsy Yankees win! Johnny Damon made it happen w/ a 9th inning, 2 out single, then he steals 2nd and 3rd in one smooth move. And then ... A-ROD. POSADA. RIVERA. Yankees win. THEEEEEEEEEEE YANKEES WIN!

Bill Villa said...

Schmidty, sadly, it's over for the Phils. Time for them to put on their overalls and help the Amish build barns in Lancaster.

Charlie Manuel should be in an assisted living center, that way he can switch to skilled nursing care when that time comes in a few months ...

Anonymous said...

Good thing Phils fans have all those towels, they can use them to dry their tears tonite :)

Good thoughts, anon 12:12, and 8:28.

YANKS LET PHILLIES WIN GAME 5
8-6

... so they can win it at home in front of their fans on Wednesday night.

8:12, YANKS IN 6.

I can't believe that he one game I went to, they lost to the freakin Nationals! Nice to see them recover in such fine style though :)

Whatta fluke, losing to the Nationals (ditto losing to the Frillies on Monday night).

Yanks in 6.

I am glad you were able to be there and ya know...

I got piks and movies and lots of exciting merchandise for Gianni. Great seats, upper deck right behind home plate (my favorite angle). Bumped into Bill Murray (literally).

YANKS ON LETTERMAN

Watch Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada on the Letterman Show last night, very cool and very funny 3-part segment at YouTube. "VIP" guest comes out at the end carrying the 2009 World Series Championship trophy (Yanks won the '09 World Series in 6 games as was predicted here at LVS).

I really enjoyed Mary J Blige's rendition of the National Anthem to start the 6th (and final) game of the 2009 World Series.

The Yankees have achieved a level of success in the world of baseball that is so gaudy, so well known, and so storied picking a handful of players to call their all time best is no easy task. They should be always competitive enough to keep pace with the others. I used to attend their games even their tickets get sold out. Luckily I fond Ticketwood.com , now I’ll before compare prices before getting tickets. Go Yankees!!
