Allentown Named "Playful City"

According to an article at the City of Allentown website,  Allentown is one of only two communities in PA to be named a "Playful City USA Community" by KaBOOM  a non-profit organization that promotes unstructured play.

According to KaBOOM CEO Darell Hammond:

“Allentown took a stand and determined that the future of their community—their children—deserve a commitment to the cause of play. This is an investment in the future, not an expenditure, and cities and towns across the country can replicate initiatives from these Playful City USA Communities so that they too can bring play back into the lives of their children.”

In the article, Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski  cites these two programs for city youth: SPP, a free Summer Playground Program available at most Allentown school playgrounds, and ACHIEVE, a program that partners with the Allentown School District, City Health Bureau, Wildlands Conservancy, Public Library, Fire Department, and Recycling Bureau.

My family and I are greatly looking forward to the new, handicapped-accessible, interactive, and free Destination Playground that will be built at Cedar Beach Park. This will be a great place for families from all over Allentown to meet for a common cause: our children. It's time for all the citizens of Allentown, young and old, natives and transplants, to start focusing on what brings us together, rather than on what separates us. Equal Opportunity for all. Our parks are for everyone to enjoy, even the "outsiders" who have relocated here-- as they are branded by the handful of Konstant Krankypants Kvetchers known kollectively as the "Defenders of the Parks" (wink wink) and "led" by embittered, vendetta-driven, 2005 Allentown Mayoral election loser Mike Molovinsky and his coded racist agenda.

Oh and speaking of Cedar Beach Park, don't miss SportsFest there this weekend!

Hooray for Allentown for being forward-thinking, for Moving Forward Together (well, most of us anyway), and for caring about our kids.

Who's Mike Molovinsky, I've never heard of him...

(me again), I've been reading your right sidebar content...now I get it...

You are giving that horse's ass Molovinsky what he craves: attention. Just ignore him.

Allentown has always been a nice place to raise a family and with this Destination Playground and the Parks upgrades it looks like our Mayor is ensuring that things will stay that way for many years to come. He gets my vote again.

"Molovinsky...Just ignore him." |The City Official

I couldn't disagree with you more. Morons like Mike Molovinski and Pat Buchanan must be confronted and countered until they all die off...

...by natural causes I meant of course (not a threat)...

I couldn't believe what a horse's ass PAT BUCHANAN was on MSNBC last night (thanks for linking to the video of it). Rachel did okay w/ him but she could have head-butted him MUCH HARDER. Molovinsky needs a (figurative, not literal) HEAD-BUTT too. The right sidebar here has it right, Molovinsky is a konstantly kvetching buttinsky know-it-all neighbor from So. Whitehall Township and a closet racist. He should stay in the closet.

I've been reading your right sidebar content too and getting a LOT of things. W-O-W.

Anon 4:49, I agree, Allentown is a great place to raise a family.

I was surprised that Rachel allowed Pat Buchanan, who is also sexist, so much time to spew his racist views, which are shared by so many white privileged males in this country.

I read a very thoughtful piece about white privilege. It's long, but I highly recommend reading it and the comments.

I think more white people need to speak out against racism and not just ignore it, whether it is coded or outright like the Philly pool incident.

The idea of reverse racism against whites is such crap. Listening to that Sessions creep made me want to throw stuff at the TV. And Buchanan actually said that he doesn't think Sotomayor got good grades in school. Shut up!

I hope young people reading the blogs and watching the news don't get lead astray by all the racism being spewed out there, because there is WAY too much.

I am so glad that my son is being raised and educated around people with different skin colors.

KaBOOM should give LVS an award for its commitment to unstructured play.

Merci, this is an investment in the future, not an expenditure, and blogs across the Lehigh Valley can replicate our initiatives.

They're currently mocking Jamaicans over at Mike's Memory Lane + Klan Rally ...

Bill Villa said...

Yes, I see, Jamaicans "make great beef pattie things you can purchase at certain corner stores in the city."

Thanks for the info, Mike.

Jamaicans "make great beef pattie things you can purchase at certain corner stores in the city."

Is this Molovinsky's way of "supporting" center city merchants, possibly?

Anonymous said...

It should be noted that Molovinsky's "blog" is a moderated blog, meaning that Molovinsky has the option of publishing or rejecting the comments that come in. So obviously Molovinsky approves of mocking and stereotyping Jamaicans, and just as obvious is that Molovinsky is posting most of the "anonymous" (wink wink) comments there himself.

Excellent points and catches.

BTW, our Sitemeter has caught Molovinsky posting anonymously here.

Angie Villa said...

We've caught O'Hare and Casey posting anonymously here, too ;D

Bill Villa said...

Yep. Amazing what a SiteMeter(R), an opinion, and some crony connections can pull off, at least in Wind Gap anyways ... and ... for now ...

It must be tough for Mike Molivinskli, not only does he KNOW EVERYTHING, he knows what's WRONG w/ everything too. Obviously keeps him pretty busy :)

Yes, he's an ever-vigilant Civic Watchdog.

And buffoon.

Welcome, Chris Casey (who never reads this blog), RCN Allentown, IP# 65.78.112.190, checking in between 8am-9am this morning.

Hey, so Chris, so how come you dropped the ball on this (?) see "Ethics, Morning Call style." You were on to something huge here. Not that it hasn't been picked up by the proper authorities (hoo boy, has it ever) but, ya know, you could have eventually broken this big story yourself ... instead of Angie and me breaking it soon. Why did you run away from this important story? Was it Valley Blogosphere aquiver-ness? But then you quit Valley Blogosphere. Was it wishy-washy indecision? SOMETHING spooked you off this story. Was it Glenn Kranzley? Was it your Post Traumatic Stress Disorder re: Bernie O'Hare? Fill us in here Chris, would ya?

Readers, DA Jim Martin cheerleader/enabler and former longtime Morning Call "newspaper" courthouse beat "reporter" Debbie Garlicki now works full-time (and, officially) for DA Jim Martin as an "Executive Aide." Yep. How crony cozy is this? And more importantly, how far back, and to what lengths, does their crony coziness go? Another excellent question that deserves to be answered. However, very long odds here in getting any Jim Martin/Debbie Garlicki questions answered, considering that Lehigh County's current "Right To Know" gatekeeper is former longtime Morning Call "newspaper" reporter and likely Dave Erdman-Jim Martin-Debbie Garlicki gal pal, KATHLEEN PARRISH. Yep. Percy Dougherty was surprised too. We'll keep you posted on our progress. For more information, see our right sidebar item on crooked & incompetent DA Jim Martin (left)

We visited the under-construction Old Fashioned Garden on Parkway Boulevard in Allentown yesterday. It appeared to us that the major "dig out" was very well thought out in that you could still stroll the garden very pleasurably and get up-close looks at all the beautiful flowers. Sure, you didn't want to fall in that rut, but we were surprised at how little of a difference that temporary big dig makes in your visit there. And we're sure that when it's completed it will be beautiful and functional and will allow access for more people than ever to enjoy the gardens, including disabled people and "outsiders." We also trust that the City has its reasons for doing the dig now rather than in the Fall or the Winter and our guess is that the cost is probably lower starting it now in Summer vs Winter when the ground is frozen.

Bill, it was nice seeing you and Angie and Gianni at the Old Fashion garden on Sunday. As we discussed there, the highly deceptive photograph staged by Mike Molovinsky that he is using at his blog to denigrate this historic renovation is quite unfair to his handful of elderly readers. As you've pointed out, the Old Fashion garden is surprisingly navigable and enjoyable, despite the construction, and was obviously very well thought out. For those of Molovinsky's readers still ambulatory and not house-bound, I would strongly encourage them to visit the Old Fashion garden themselves and they will see that Molovinsky's photograph is intended to deceive them into believing that the construction is much more intrusive and disruptive than it really is. Shame on you Mike, trying to hoodwink Allentown's elders. They deserve our respect, not a mockery of their intelligence.

"highly deceptive photograph staged by Mike Molovinsky that he is using at his blog to denigrate this historic renovation"

I noticed this too. He selected and angle and "composition" of elements that makes the garden look really claustrophobic and chaotic and it's not like that there. A very self-serving photograph from a very self-serving "man."

Same Old Fashioned Garden right now, shot honestly from a different angle ...

A picture is worth a thousand words....and its sad to see Mr. Molovinsky bastardizing and misusing the photographer talent he possesses to deceive people. I pray that one day Mr. Molovinsky is able to put his (albeit humiliating) 59% to 3% loss to Mayor Pawlowski in 2005 behind him and move on w/ his life.

Molovinsky has blogged that the city got "no input" on the park renovations and basically cooked this all up in total secret. Another lie, obviously, as The City Official's info proves (thanks).

Huge congratulations to Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski for bringing 1,000 new jobs to the City of Allentown. This is a fantastic accomplishment in a reelection year.

While I might not always agree w/ Pawlowski (I disagree w/ him regularly), I too must applaud Mayor Pawlowski's "major coup" in this matter. 1,000 new jobs in Allentown is terrific news.
