My Art Work

Here's some art work I did back in college (1980's) Both pieces are large oil paintings. The first piece is called
"Til Death" and the second piece is "June's Glove." I'm not real good at photographing my work, sorry about the glare from the flash.

The wedding painting was a photo-realism assignment which I got a C on. I worked from an old photo of my aunt's wedding. I did not have the patience to spend hundreds of hours in my studio tying to achieve an airbrushed, photographically realistic image, so I painted it more in my own style. They did not like that. I thought the shot was neat because you could not really see anyone from the front, and I was kinda anti-marriage at that time! My professor was not real concerned about the meaning, just the technique. I think I was only 20 when I painted it. Most of my work is mixed media, (painting, collage, found objects.)

June's glove has a real pin (50's costume jewelry) attached, and a xerox of a glove. The glove accidentally fell there and because it had adhesive on it, I could not remove it, so I left it there. This piece was in a juried show at the Reading Museum and I actually won a prize!

Anon,

Thanks!!

andy,

15 minutes of fame is enough for me, but thanks.

Wish you were still around. I actually met you back in 84' near the Whitney Museum in NYC. You were really nice. You stopped and posed for a pic with two friends of mine but I never got a pic of myself with you. Then I lost your autograph! I'm so bummed about that.

I never understood how one can put a grade on "art."

You have a real talent. Perhaps one day I'll be able to hire you to paint something :)

I really like the texture of the oil painting in "Til Death". Something would have been lost in the translation if you just did airbrushing as your teacher asked. The way you did it gives insight on how you interpreted your aunt's wedding.

Thanks Z, and I agree. After I graduated I did some alternate versions of the wedding painting. One was in a cubist style, like Picasso.

aj,

An art student needs to learn the basics of drawing and painting realistically before doing anything different or non-traditional, like abstraction for example. I guess my profs thought I was not ready to go on to the next level. They were really hard on me, but that made me work even harder.

As you venture into a teaching career my advice to you is to always challenge your students, and don't be afraid to set the bar really high! The prof who gave me the C later gave me all A's and inspired me to become a teacher.

Thanks LOLV,

The photos I took of my art work are really lousy, but I will try to crop them or fix them a little so I can post them here at my blog.
