Hersh's is Coming Back!

When I started blogging back in January, I wrote about the changes at Hersh's Market on 19th St. You can scroll down and view that post if you'd like. I had written about the empty shelves, stale bread, and kinda creepy owners who had not kept it an appealing old fashioned corner market. Well, now according to today's Morning Call business section, a couple has bought Hersh's from the guys who could not make a go of it and they plan on restoring it to an old fashioned market which would better serve the needs of the community. There is hope! I'm going to try to be optimistic here. They say it will have a nostalgic atmosphere, and a custom deli/butcher shop where you can have your fresh steaks cut to whatever thickness you like. (Sorry vegetarians, but I love a thick juicy steak).

Congratulations to the neighborhood. I saw a story about this in the business section today. Hopefully they can make a go of it.

mrs. dottie, you and others will have to put your pocketbook where your mouth is. that means pushing the cart around and pretty much filling it up, even paying a few more cents per item. shoppers are funny, they only want one can or packet of something, yet they want to choose from 20 different brands. i also wish them the best of luck, they will need it.

Hey Mr. Molo-whatever,

You geezerly old curmudgeon!;)
I knew you would rain on my parade!

I think this store will be plenty busy. People will pay a few cents more for quality, convenience, and friendly service.

I'm so looking forward to taking summer strolls to the corner market for pop and candy.

You said pop in eastern pa. I would only expect to hear that near Pittsburg!

Corner stores are certainly part of the good feeling of living in a walkable community. There is a place on 8th and Chew St. where I get my lunch meat.

Any positive neighorhood economy is a plus. Glad to see you getting some of that.

Geoff,
I'm originally from Joisey, but I like using the old fashioned word for soda, which is "pop."

I think bringing this old style corner market back is something that I would not have expected in Allentown. I keep hearing "well, Hess's is not coming back, times change sweetie, blah, blah, blah."

Gross Meat Counter or not, I'm still thrilled about the return of Hersh's market, and I'm sure I'll be stopping in on the regular!

I am glad about Hersh's, but I'm kicking myself for not getting in there to check out the creepy guys.

It's good to have Hersh's back! Corner market's are priceless. If people can afford to pay for Wegman's, they can afford a little extra for Hersh's.

I say we gang-tackle this Molovinsky guy and give him a Dutch rub ...

Z,

You make an excellent point. I'd rather pay a little extra to a family owned town market than a chain like Wegman's.

I will echo comments here about the importance of corner stores.

Technically, there is a dividing line between when people are willing to get in a car to drive to the market vs. walk. We are still a small city such that it is difficult to support corner stores, but with gas prices going up, I would love to walk to a store, which I cannot easily do where I live.

Support is important, and the willingness to pay higher prices in exchange for convenience.

To all, it is vital to recognize that subtle sense of community necessary to support establishments like this. We cannot shop everywhere, but we can help.
