Let The President Inspire Our Son

Update: see "Comments" section to find out which member(s) of the Allentown School District Board of Education are regularly contributing "fellow commentator members" of the rabidly racist blog, The Allentown Commentator.

Readers, this is an email we've sent to our son Gianni's principal and teacher at Muhlenberg Elementary School in Allentown.

Dear Mr. Turton and Miss Dex:

We understand that the Allentown School District, caving to
NeoCon right wingnut racist lunacy along with the mainstream media,  will be leaving it up to individual ASD classroom teachers to decide whether or not their students, our children, can watch an address from the President of The United States, Barack Obama, scheduled for the first day of school on Tuesday.

Please be advised: we insist that our son Gianni have access to President Obama's address to school children on Tuesday, at school. As such, we strongly advise you to take whatever steps are necessary to ensure that Gianni has access to the President's address, including moving him to a classroom where the address is being shown, or moving him to another school where President Obama's speech is being "allowed."

Thank you for your consideration, wishing you a productive and enriching new school year.

Best Regards,

Angie Villa & Bill Villa

Update: Readers, we got this nice email response the day after posting this post ...

Dear Mrs. Villa,

Muhlenberg Elementary will be taking the necessary steps in order to show President Obama's scheduled speech to our students. If you have any other concerns, please let me know.

I look forward to meeting you and Gianni on Tuesday!

Thank you, Miss Dex :)

Update: Got this email from Muhlenberg's cool principal coupla minutes ago (10:34am, 9/8/09)

Mr. & Mrs. Villa,

It is our intention to show the President's address today. Barring any technical problems the students will see and hear the speech.

Phil Turton

Update: 12:27pm, 9/8/09, we just watched President Obama's awe-inspiring speech to U.S. students. How anybody can be against this man totally escapes us. On a personal note, we especially liked Obama's words on "standing up to bullies."

Readers, several members of the Allentown School Board are regular participants in a local "hate blog" known as "The Allentown Commentator," which is commandeered by local NeoCon right wingnut GOP stall wart, Scott Armstrong.

Here's a representative sample of the racist crap you'll find daily at lil Scotty's "Hate Hutch" ...

Strong language is necessary to counter the REAL haters who are trying to muzzle our President and harm our country. And we have every right to be angry over this. We should not have to fight for our child to be "allowed" to hear the President of the United States at school. This is outrageous. The wingnuts say that Obama is "indoctrinating American children to his socialist agenda." Since when is telling kids to stay in school and do their homework part of a political agenda?
And Faux News is fueling the fire of lies, propaganda and hate.

Seems like Obama wants to encourage kids to stay in school, while the wingnuts want to keep their kids out of school. These moronic, brainwashed by the media, so called "parents" are "indoctrinating" their kids into being haters.

Reagan actually discussed tax policy, national defense funding, and other political issues when he spoke to school kids, did people say he was trying to indoctrinate our youth? I doubt it. There are Americans who fear and distrust a Black man in the Whitehouse, and that's what this is really about.

The nutcase who keeps calling us "haters" seems to have no problem with the brand of sadistic lies and hate his evil buddy spews at The Troll Parade Blog. Why is this?

Anonymous said...

You are exercising your rights as a parent, and that is good. It is also my right as a parent to disagree with you, and that is also good.

Please stop calling me racist if I disagree with you. I strongly feel that politics do not belong in a classroom.

The President speaking is a political act. I would have taken the same stance if John McCain were President and he was going to do the same thing.

It's ok to disagree without resorting to name calling and vile insults. Most Americans have the ability to make their own minds up without the media (i.e., the NYT for liberals and the WSJ for conservatives) doing it for us.

Angie Villa said...

Anon, your comment does not make sense to me. I strongly disagree about our President's speech of encouragement to children as a political act. I believe that the school administrators and parents who choose or allow "opting out" are the ones engaged in a deeply political act, not the President. Opting out is the worst civics lesson I can imagine. You are telling kids that if you disagree with your government then you should ignore what the President, who is a sitting democratically elected leader, has to say. You have a fear that Obama will be brainwashing our kids in a way that other politicians, like say the mayor or Congressperson who visits the school will not. If opting out on the President is allowed, then so should opting out on other political figures who visit the school. Can I opt out on other aspects of the curriculum that I disagree with?

As far as name calling and vile insults, I think the rightwing has the advantage over the liberals in that department. The lies and propaganda about Obama as a Nazi or commie czar indoctrinating our youth are the rantings of lunatics.
It's not based on fact.

And I am not calling people racist for disagreeing with me.

Hello Brilliant Villas

I love it when you snare people's IP and call them out (especially Casey). You are truly the two most brilliant bloggers in Blogdom. I am addicted to reading you for the sheer drama, and your delicious sense of humor, but mostly for the FACTS you present. You are both very creative. And brilliant. Don't ever lose faith. What happened to your daughter is tragic, but what people (lunatics) have tried to paint you as is even sadder. Their hate (and fear) has consumed them. I hope you especially nail the District Attorney and I have no doubt you will. I ask you keep going and remove any thoughts of surrender. Your enemies it is arguable are clinically insane. Please persevere. They can't block you.

Bill Villa said...

Thanks for the kind words of support and encouragement. It's readers like you who have made LVS the #1 Most Influential Political Blog in Pennsylvania again this week and #1 in The Lehigh Valley for 33 of the past 37 weeks, merci.

"the FACTS you present"

People in the "Lehigh Valley" must be like ostriches with their heads in the sand. The first comment here linked to a just unbelievably bigoted and hateful comment at an area blog, and there it is in black & white FACT, and not one person (other than this blog's authors) has one word to say about that. Instead, they chastise the blog authors for being "You're hateful, You're hateful, You're hateful" for using appropriately strong but still restrained language in a note to the principal, which another commenter calls "name-calling and vile insults." But that comment at "The Allentown Commentator" doesn't raise even an eyebrow? So what caused the gene pool around Lehigh Walley PA to come ott so nutz once? I suppose the "free speech" of the school board members who are regulars at that hate blog will be defended by blogging Allentonians?

Bill Villa said...

8:18, you sound like a new reader here (?) and possibly a new resident to the area ... welcome. We need more of you to move here and replace the relics of our past as they (finally, Jesus) go to that big Grange Hall in the sky.

In a nutz shell, if LVS is FOR it, you can bet our local NeoCon blogosphere is AGAINST it.

* Getting rid of a crooked & incompetent DA ... they're AGAINST it!

* Shutting down nuisance bars that over serve people who then kill people driving drunk ... they're AGAINST it! But of course we prevailed on this anyway.

* Building a playground for the co-mingling enrichment of people of different races and physical abilities, they're AGAINST it!

* Shutting up and ostracizing a proven evil sadist, they're AGAINST it!

* Shit-canning an evil sadist who was protecting a crooked & incompetent DA, they're AGAINST it! Oopsie this one got away from them too :(

Thing is, they have no power over us. None. Zero.

Very much like Obama and the Republicans.

This blog is free to accomplish anything and everything we set our "brilliant" (thanks!) minds and steadfast determination to accomplishing (read our right sidebar content for an outline of our Justice Mission and our "Hit List," not a threat).

So far, we're very pleased w/ our accomplishments, which include, basically, getting our way, the way we want, all the time. Granted, there's room for improvement regarding WHEN we get our way. It could (and should) happen faster and we're working on that.

You see, when you're right about all the things that make up your Justice Mission, 100% right, as we are, everything else eventually falls into place-- and goes our way. All we have to do is maintain our Relentless Offense. And that's our pleasure, because these bastards deserve us.

Thanks for reading!

In support of you, I just posted this comment at "Urban Bamboozle"

It's really dishonest how Alfunso does not provide the "context" for Bill Villa's "quote" either in his blog here or in his monthly e-newsletter. Yes, Mr. Villa calls Alfunso a "shameless publicity whore." Why? Alfunso doesn't say. Its b/c Alfunso continues to defend O'Hare and bask in that spotlight of O'Hare's 600 blog readers...after learning what O'Hare did to a fellow black man, George Usury, which got O'Hare disbarred. I see Mr. Villa has added a new "quote" to describe Todd: Uncle Tom.

Both of Villa's "quotes" make perfect sense to me.

Bill Villa said...

Point being, we didn't forget ...

Bill Villa said...

Readers, ROBERT E. SMITH Jr., is President of the Allentown School District Board of Education.

Here's "Bob" addressing the klansmen at The Allentown Commentator blog w/ the warm and spooky greeting, "My fellow commentator members ..." and clearly identifying himself as "Robert E smith Jr. The only Republican on school board at the current time.." and he even gives his (presumably) home email address, esmitty4@aol.com.

Among his "fellow commentator members," Bob is always most welcome (white hood optional) and he's also apparently something of a "card" and a "cut up" what w/ his anti-Obama political humor such as this, which is fine, hey, it IS a free country and Bob IS a flaming NeoCon Republican ... as his dismaying endorsement of this yahoo raising "interesting points" reveals. Geez Bob, you're in EDUCATION for Christ's sake.

But when another "fellow commentator member" posted the racist crap we called out in our first comment here, ASD Board President Bob Smith had nuthin' to say about it.

Not a word.

Of course none of Scotty and Bob's other "fellow commentator members" did either.

Finally at like 1:00 in the morning the next day, one brave soul, a Ray Greenberg from Conshohocken weighed in and asked:

"Please tell me...what was the purpose of this post, if not overt racism? WELL??"

Here's what the host of lil Scotty's "Hate Hutch," Scott Armstrong, had to say to Ray Greenberg ...

"Let's be careful before we make the very serious charge of racism here. "

Seriously, Scotty? You're not sure the comment was racist? Readers, notice how Scotty closes the comment by saying:

"I agree the point could have been drawn in a less derisive manner."

BUT ARMSTRONG KEEPS THE COMMENT UP THERE ... TO THIS DAY.

And shows us his true colors:

"The sad truth is that misguided efforts to help those who may be disadvantaged by demanding less of them has unfortunate results. If affirmative action was a solution to poor performance would anyone with a good heart be against it?" -Scott Armstrong

And Robert E. Smith, Jr., lil Scotty's "fellow commentator member," and President of the Allentown School District Board of Education ...

says nuthin'.

I just want to say this was a great speech and our kids did get to watch this. I am shocked that people would even consider giving in to pressure from the wacko right. I think the fear mongering scared of change lunies have won though. They have convinced the people that run our schools to take the threats of socialist brain washing seriously. Doesn't that just scare the hell out of you that the people that make decisions on our childerns education would deem it necessary to stop and consider a theat from a poltical organisation. My kids go to Nazareth school district and they sent a letter home giving us the option to have kids bail out if they like they and we chose to be there and let them be inspired by our countries leader. I hate to say it but most of the hard leaning right are raciest bastards that would do or say anything to derail our president s ideas.I think these guys are scared and they should be, because if we don't see some change in the next 5 to 10 years we will all be broke and this country will be light years behind the rest of the world.

Re: Obama's speech to U.S. school children today, there were some districts that made watching the speech mandatory, for all students, and hats off to them for doing the right thing, and not caving to the lunatic right wingnut racists.

Pushing for, and allowing kids to "opt out" of the speech is what made this a political issue.

I repeat:

Pushing for, and allowing kids to "opt out" of the speech is what made this a political issue.

Obama's speech was not political, and was never intended to be. The way he spoke to the kids, and the important message he gave, was so inspirational. He made it personal by telling his own story, and I am sure many disadvantaged kids will feel encouraged to stay in school after hearing our President. We hope Obama does this for the next 7 years in a row and that the tradition becomes an annual event for every U.S. President who has the tough task of following Obama.

It is appalling that our President was not given the benefit of the doubt in this situation (like say how Bush was re: invading Iraq?) Journalists actually asking the question, "Should Obama be allowed to speak to our children?" How outrageous. Past Presidents have always been given the benefit of the doubt, same with other politicians who speak at school. I don't recall parents being able to "opt out" on seeing Charlie Dent when he visits. This says to me that the lunatic right wingnuts just hate Obama, and they are using "fear of socialist indoctrination" as a cover for their underlying racist motivations and distrust of a black man.
