Beatnik Brosky Bops By to Banter w/ Bill

Relentless local music legend Steve Brosky (center) dropped by The Villa's security-patrolled North Allentown estate on Monday afternoon (he had an appointment).

With co-writer (and videographer and theatre impressario) Ara Barlieb (right) manning the tape recorder and joining in the discussion, Steve and Ara interviewed and gabbed w/ Bill Villa (left) for about an hour and a half.

Steve and Ara are writing a cool new book, a combination of Brosky's Memoirs and a history of popular music in and around the Lehigh Valley circa 1960s to the present. The book will be titled, "I Never Worked at Bethlehem Steel," and there are two publishers interested already and here's hoping for a bidding war.

Steve and Ara have been interviewing local music mavens & movers & shakers & significant others for about a year: Jerry Deane, Jay Proctor, Pat Wallace, Dave Fry, Dave Sestak, Bill (ahem) Villa, and many others, and the plan is for Steve and Ara to get everybody who counts (and who can still remember the 60s, 70s, and 80s) on the record and in the book. This should be a great read! And there'll no doubt be some great photos in there too!

During his interview, Bill waxed poetic on The Daddy Licks Band (1979-1986, and, 2006-Present), telling some great stories (old & new) about the band (Bill was/is The Daddy Licks Band's manager) as well as our popular power-pop band, The Villas (1999-Present).

BTW, you can see Steve Brosky, The Daddy Licks Band, and The Villas at Mayfair 2010, so check the schedule and save the date and be there!

And be sure to check out Steve Brosky's latest release that he freebie-comped us (Merci, Steve), "a collection of bro-sky," a "greatest hits" selection of songs from Steve's previous 6 CDs, a great batch of 12 songs on one Brosky disc.

Singer, songwriter, musicologist, frequent Lehigh Valley Music Award Winner, funky hunky king, and now, author, Steve Brosky. An impressive resume addition, Steve, and hey man, we want a signed & numbered copy of "I Never Worked at Bethlehem Steel" as soon as it's ready to read.

Thanks again for bopping by, it was nice seeing you here again, and also great meeting hipster Ara Barlieb.

This blog seems to be an incredible source for "real" local news, even though much of what you report here is highly disturbing. I had been relying on the "mainstream" media. Obviously, they do not want to know what's really going on around here, or should I say, they don't want US to know it. Keep up the great work Villas.

Interestingly, our Most Frequent visitor is The Morning Call "newspaper" ... although ... we would not say they're our Most "Loyal" visitor, if you know what we mean :) here they are visiting for the first of what will be about a dozen or more visits here today and everyday (even Saturdays & Sundays) ...

Bill, new Morning Call publisher Tim Ryan's publicly released contact info and email address are here:

http://www.gbc.org/page/directory/p/12/

Maybe you should email Mr. Ryan a note informing him each time one of his employees visits LVS presumably on company time using a company computer. Mr. Ryan might appreciate the heads-up and look into why his employees are visiting so often during working hours, yet not producing any news articles as a result.

If I was a CEO, I'd see this as a productivity issue.

If I was a publisher, I'd want to know what my newspaper employees were repeatedly looking at that was so damn interesting - yet not interesting enough to get a news story out of.

Bill,

I think LVS's ranking as #1 Most Influential Political Blog in Pennsylvania most weeks COMBINED WITH the frequency of visits by Tribune employees on company time are solid reasons why Mr. Ryan should give you some face time.

A glance at his creds here

http://www.baltimoresun.com/about/bal-about-sun-executive,0,3025181.htmlstory

suggests he has the smarts to understand why an old-media/new-media handshake between you two is worth his time.

Perhaps he would spare you sufficient minutes for you to open his eyes re: the disgraceful abomination that is the Morning Call's current model of how to go about affiliating with local blogs.

This is not a trivial part of how a newspaper presents itself to existing and potential consumers. Not these days, when newspapers are flatlining or gasping on life support.

Good luck!

Bill Villa said...

Interesting ...

and so maybe, just maybe, Tim Ryan is not an evil sadist and an O'Hare-Duped Dunce like Morning Call managing editor Dave Erdman and his gopher right hand "man" assistant Mike Miorelli both are. Hey, it's worth a shot (not a threat) ...

The Original Sins and Saint John's Alliance need to be in Brosky's book.

Bill Villa said...

Yes. Most definitely.

Jesse Smith said...

St. John's Alliance! There's a blast from the past. "St. John" was the murdered John Lennon I believe.

I remember taking a date to a club and the cover band "High Keys" (if I remember the name correctly) did a spot-on performance of Genesis' "Watcher Of The Skies" in a here-today-gone-tomorrow nightspot on Hamilton Boulevard around 19th-ish.

"Watcher Of The Skies"??? LIVE??? And they were brilliant. I could not believe my ears.

I guess Brosky's smart enough to troll thru the Morning Call's nightspot ads from past eras for band names, yes?

Jesse Smith said...

OMG you guys! Totally on topic - Check this out! The Young Ideas! Lenny Martucci and I forget the guitar player's name. They did a ridiculous fun song called "Barny-bus" about (I think) Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows. I hung out with them once. First time I heard a Hammond B3 with rotating Leslie speakers in person! Lenny had the longest hair in high school.

The Limits! Pete Smoyer was mixing multi-track while I was still struggling to simul-synch 4-track.

Pete's doing okay, BTW ...

Steve's got a great memory, so I'm confident he'll hit all the right keys, plus I'm sure his large gang of interview subjects has jogged quite a few nuggets loose.

Other must-haves (in my opinion) ...

* WMUH/WDIY
* Bill Daniel's Rock Palace
* The Club & Nikko's
* Tom Makoul
* The Roxy Theatre

... and, did you know that a certain 'runaway' lead singer grrl w/ a 'bad reputation' and who 'loves rock & roll' had her band mates de-tune all 3 Daddy Licks' guitars that were sitting on stage before the DLB opened for her. Yep. I hate myself for (still) loving her :)

Another must-have
(my opinion) ...

The Goodman Brothers, featuring, of course, the amazingly talented Goodman brothers, and, I would still say to this day, the best guitar player I've had the jaw-dropping pleasure to watch up close, Steve Kimock. Steve K played on a Brosky record or two so I'm sure Steve B will include that (he better). The Villas had the great honor of sharing the stage w/ Steve Kimock a few years back in Bethlehem (I was a fawning regular at The Lighthouse back when The Goodman Brothers ruled there) and boy was he a nice guy. He even called us up after the gig to say how much he liked our original songs and did we wanna (gulp) get together and jam sometime. He said we could "learn stuff from each other." Since I was pretty sure Steve Kimock already knew the 5 chords I know, this jam session (sadly) has not happened yet ... but ya never know ... maybe one day ...

Bill Villa said...

The smartest (and my favorite) lead guitar player that I've had the pleasure of playing w/ is The Villas lead guitar player (the "Chick w/ the Lick"), Angie Villa (left).

Bill Villa said...

If you'd like to experience the guitar brilliance of Angie Villa (which is evident on all Villa's songs), download our song "My Occupation" (over 1,100 other people already have, just sayin') and listen to the perfectly complimentary (while not over-playing) intricate parts Angie is playing on electric guitar (American Fender Telecaster) as counter-point to my acoustic (1976 Guild) guitar parts. It's like a "basket weave" these 2 guitar parts, and it's mostly Angie's doing. And then, in the guitar solo, listen to Angie give Pink Floyd's David Gilmour a run for his cool soloing money. Oh yeah. Now there's a Guitar Hero, Angie Villa.

Angie Villa said...

Merci, sweetie ;D and (Readers) Bill meant to say the "chick with the guitar lick."

(Off Topic Giggle) Since "Stir the Pot" and BV scared the printer's ink out of the dozens of Morning Call staffers who've been lurking here all day every day at LVS for months & months when they should be exposing puppy mills (by threatening to inform new CEO Tim Ryan), curiously, very curiously, no Morning Call IP numbers have been spotted on our SiteMeter(R) since then. Hmm. However, we are seeing dozens of IP numbers and locations we've never seen before, after hours, and before 9:00am. Ah yes, the "power" (wink wink) of the (pusillanimous) local press!

My mistake. The spelling of his name is Joey Colaruso. Check out this link.
He was musician from the Mod Mill that my aunt was friends with. This also would have been around the time of the Rock Palace had go-go dancers in cages.
