Michael Donovan Ethics Debacle Attracts Local Media and Statewide Interest

[5/30 Update: "Donovan Ethics Debacle Attracts Local Media" has been honored as the #1 most influential per post blog in Pennsylvania this week by BlogNet News. "Merci," to our legions of loyal LVS readers, statewide.]

[5/27 Update: Donovan Ethics Investigation on Channel 69 News. Q. Can Donovan really request a hearing after an official Advisory Opinion (that he doesn't like) is issued by the Ethics Board, as he's quoted in 69's coverage? We have a clarification inquiry in to the Allentown Ethics Board, stay tuned ...]

[5/27 Updated Update: Readers, plugging in JJ Eaton III's numbers, it looks like Donovan's window of opportunity to request a hearing as I had challenged him to do has expired, either on May 21 (if counting by calendar days) or (oopsie) yesterday, if counting by business days. So ... on 69 News @ 5:00pm yesterday, when 69 reported that Donovan "will appeal and request a hearing if the Ethics Board rules against him," did Donovan totally dupe Rob Vaughn & Company? Or (and we don't wanna believe this) was 69 News attempting to dupe its viewers on behalf of Donovan? We have a request for a comment in to 69 News Director Brad Rinehart and on-air personality Rob Vaughn, stay tuned ... UpDate on Updated Update: Brad Rinehart responds (Merci, Brad), see "Comments" section]

[5/27 Updated Update on Update: If JJ Eaton III's "forward" of the Villa's complaint to Donovan on May 5 was electronic (email) and Donovan received it May 5, then yeah, looks like time's up for Donovan regarding requesting a hearing. However, if JJ's "forward" was via U.S. Mail (and we don't know; and JJ could say anything), Donovan would then indeed have more time (and maybe as much as a week more, U.S. Mail) to Accept The Bill Villa Challenge and Request a Hearing.]

Original Post Starts Here

There's a decent story in Wednesday's Morning Call on the ethics complaint we filed against A-Town City Councilperson Mike Donovan, by Jarrett Renshaw.

Not sure why Sheena's death and my "tanglings" w/ Jim Martin and The Morning Call are part of a story on an ethics investigation of Mike Donovan (wink wink) and [Corrections & Clarifications] there were two (2) courtroom "spats" w/ local bloggers, one in Northampton County, and another in Lehigh County, and I prevailed (easily) in both cases, w/ a third case in progress. Other than that, we thought Renshaw's article was kinda fair.

We are anticipating that this stunningly deceitful quote from Donovan in the article will back-fire on him like an exploding cigar. It should anyway ...

"... all of us who have been attacked wish Mr. Villa would see that we wish no harm to him or his family," Donovan said.

Really, Mike? No harm? FYI, the Ethics Board has 13 pages of offensive, sadistically cruel, false, and clearly libelous comments, enabled and encouraged by you, against me and my grief-stricken family at your blog. Including two by you that declare, "I am just going to let all comments run. They are fun to read," and "I would never apologize [to Villa]."

BTW, here's the "all of us" Donovan is referring to.

Will the Allentown Ethics Board do its duty and make Allentown proud?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Yeah, Mr. Jarrett did do a "decent" job on that story - and I mean "decent" in the sense of "refined or virtuous" not "sufficient for the purpose".

I think the mention of the LaBarre case served as background and exposition/explanation of Mr. Donovan's reference to "a particular matter".

Moreover, Mr. Jarrett's reference to Bill's grievances re: The Morning Call Valley Blogosphere links and DA Martin coverage were an unexpected acknowledgement of the very existence of these issues. As such, this article has said more in print than any Morning Call or Tribune corporate officer has been willing to address personally with Bill Villa (anybody seen the Morning Call's "Welcome Mat" lately?).

I had a lot of anxiety about what was going to happen re: this article. Mr. Jarrett took the high road, and The Morning Call let him do so.

Decent!

Bill Villa said...

Well said, Jess, and we agree w/ you.

Readers, for the record, here's the full "on the record" statement I gave Jarrett Renshaw yesterday as he was hustling to meet a deadline. I understand about space constraints in a story and I'm not whining that my entire statement wasn't published, but I did want anyone who's interested (Germansville? Walnutport?) to see it in its gloriously composed entirety, just sayin' ...

-----------

"Many of the vile blog comments being compliantly encouraged by Donovan at his blog against me and my grief-stricken family are posted and signed by two local blogging "regulars."

By publicly allying with these attacking bloggers, I believe Donovan is violating clause 171.04 of the City's Code of Ethics, in that he is positioning himself to "attain social and political benefits," via publicity, of both a political and personal nature, reciprocally, from these attacking bloggers at their local political blogs, and I have submitted hard copy evidence to the Ethics Board that supports this.

I believe Donovan also stands to gain "social and political benefits" from The Morning Call, where Donovan and several of these attacking bloggers are handpicked members of "Lehigh Valley Blogosphere," a group of local bloggers who are, incredibly, featured on The Morning Call’s website.

"Lehigh Valley Blogosphere" exposes these attacking bloggers and their blog writings, including Michael Donovan's anti-Villas attacks, to the newspapers' self-touted 10 million online visitors monthly.

I'd call that not only a "benefit" but a grossly lopsided bully/crony advantage."

re: “nor allow others to use, the authority, title or prestige of public office for the attainment of … social or political benefits,” Donovan’s inappropriately public Internet interactions with these attacking bloggers gives them credibility via their “approved affiliation” with an elected City official and, I believe, this tarnishes Donovan's office in the process. And, I believe, all of this is inconsistent with public interests."

Angie Villa said...

It's rare, and very telling I believe, that the Morning Call is not allowing any comments at its Renshaw article on Donovan/Ethics Board. Only times I know of that they disable comments is when they're positive there'll be an onslaught of offensive, sadistically cruel, false, and clearly libelous comments on the way from the likes of "all of them."

Obviously, the newspaper is very familiar w/ this unfolding story and the M.O. of its ringleader.

Consigliere said...

Although Mr. Donovan may believe that "all of them" have been under attack by Mr. Villa, it cannot be stressed enough that criminal courts in both Northampton county and Lehigh county saw things very, very differently on this score which is Villas 2, Team O'Hare 0.

Anonymous said...

How come they didn't print the vile comments, that show what a shit Donovan is?
Also, how come you can't comment on the MC article. cowards, fucking cowards.
Oh well, at least they gave you some acknowledgment. some cred.

I like the part about the board could have ignored the complaint, so at least Doniovan is having to at least go thru the motions of having his feet put to the fire.

Sondra Wise said...

How come the paper didn't name the 2 local bloggers who signed their names to dozens of libelous comments against the Villas at Donovan's blog, and no doubt posted the hundreds of offensive and cruel coments "anonymously," namely Bernie O'Hare and Chris Casey.

Bill Villa said...

City O, the disabled comments thing could be interpreted as the Call protecting Donovan (one of their own, don't forget, and Donovan's wife Diana Morse is on their freelance "go to" list), or muzzling us so we can't elaborate (like we did here) or (most likely) someone at the Call forgot to throw the comments "on" switch.

Consigliere, verdicts don't matter around here, even if you're found not guilty (as I've been, twice), people meaning "no harm" (wink wink) like Donovan feel free to libelously publish that you're a "convicted criminal."

2:20, I'm w/ ya ...

Sondra, merci ...

Angie Villa said...

Be careful what you say there, BV, facts-wise, about Mrs. Donovan being MC freelance, or Donovan will again accuse you of "attacking" his wife (w/ facts?) But then Arts Commissioner Donovan, total phony fraud that he is, says he enjoys reading personal attack comments against YOUR wife (moi) a community arts volunteer, b/c they're "fun to read." This point is proven by Donovan's public support of the co-creator of The Troll Parade blog, and the LVPoliblob team of factually challenged juveniles who have libelously attacked me and provoked us. Donovan benefits personally and politically from being on O'Hare's stage, so his oft-touted ideals of "civility" and "mutual respect" only apply when Mr. Donovan wants them to. Donovan is trying to get the ethics board to focus on YOUR retaliation, the same way snake O'Hare does. Donovan has been trained very well.

10:44, Donovan making up his own rules (and on TV no less) and saying he'll "get a hearing" from the Ethics Board if he doesn't get the outcome he wants from them reminds us of how O'Hare lied at his blog to his readers that Judge Baratta would be giving him another shot at reversing an outcome O'Hare didn't like. O'Hare was totally full of crap on this (and flat-out lying to his readers) and what we're seeing on 69 News is likely an O'Hare-Coached Donovan-- and having O'Hare as your legal advisor usually turns out tragically, sadly.

Note: I have cc'd Allentown Chief of Police Roger MacLean on this email, just in case there's an unsolved DUI hit and run that fits your description.

But anyway, Jim, you sneered a question at me, before hurriedly getting in your vehicle, locking the door, putting the window up, and peeling the heck out of there wearing wet panties.

You sneered: "What are YOU doing here Villa?"

Well sorry to penetrate your crony sanctuary Jimbo, but I was at Lehigh Country Club celebrating my mom's 85th birthday, and I wish you would have given me a chance to answer your question and get a conversation going w/ you instead of running away (pusillanimously) like you did. And I really liked that. A lot. You made my day Jim. Thanks.

But next time, please stick around a bit as we have lots to talk about-- such as your upcoming unsuccessful 2011 reelection campaign.

When is palimpsest going to be sitting in front of the ethics board for his conduct or misconduct.

Bill Villa said...

(and still trying to figure out your context intention, re: "palimpsest," it's early, 1st cup of coffee) ...

When will Donovan be sitting in front of the ethics board for his conduct or misconduct?

Well, don't forget, Donovan has commented that he doesn't believe there's been any misconduct on his part. And if he really believes this, one would think he would have dragged me in front of the Ethics Board, for a hearing, ASAP after receiving a copy of my complaint against him, to clear himself. This of course hasn't happened (yet) and time's running out or is already expired.

On 69 News on Wednesday, Donovan is quoted as saying that he'll basically roll the dice and take his chances that the Ethics Board (which he had a hand in re-constituting) will rule against ME, and this way Donovan (again) won't have to be sitting in front of the ethics board for his gross ethical misconduct.

Re: Donovan appealing a ruling that goes against him and then retroactively requesting a hearing, the jury's still out on whether there's even an appeal mechanism in the City's ethics code enforcement.

As 69 News Director Brad Rinehart told LVS in an email exclusive here yesterday ...

"I have a half dozen calls out to get an official answer about whether there is any procedure for appeal. We'll update the story on the air if Donovan's assertion was erroneous."

And of course I contacted the Ethics Board on this same issue yesterday hours before Brad did-- I've also inquired whether or not time has expired for Donovan to request a hearing via the procedures that do exist.

So the ball's in the Ethics Board's court, and considering they've announced a public meeting for Tuesday where they're scheduled to release their Written Advisory Opinion and any recommended Disciplinary Action, I "trust" (wink wink) they're on this ...

Bill Villa said...

Bottom Line:

Donovan doesn't have the GUTS to confront me and my allegations, w/ an Ethics Board watching.

"I am disappointed to see the last bastion of no moderation of comments has fallen. Villa must be celebrating in his basement."

Only a total psycho buffoon like Chris Casey would subliminally "confess" to having posted that awful anonymous "basement" comment about Sheena here at LVS...via using the exact same language of evil in a signed comment elsewhere. And if Chris didn't author it, he is endorsing it, by referencing it. He is also, quite obviously, referencing the vile comment to provoke the Villas, by way of pushing the cruelest "hot button" he can find, the death of Bill's daughter.

Bill Villa said...

"Was it Chris Casey who said..."

Yeah it most likely was.

Now THESE pearls of wisdom we know for sure were posted by Chris Casey cuz he signed his name to them. Note: Chris has since flip-flopped (back, again) and is currently O'Hare's #1 Most Loyal B.S. Load of Lies Swallower (Donovan being "number two.") But enjoy these wistful nostalgic times (from last year) when Chris actually got it right, for once ...

Chris Casey on Bernie O'Hare ...

Let's get one thing clear.

Bernie O'Hare had his license to practice law revoked in 1986.

They are never going to give it back, even if he tried to get reinstated, right Bernie?

That didn't happen because he was such a great guy, it happened because he LIED. He forged Documents. He screwed over clients.

Did I leave anything out?

He uses his blog to settle personal and political scores, perceived and in many cases non-existant.

Bernie has written lie after lie about me, in vain attempts to discredit me, but I am still around.

His Blog is his life, it is all he has, and his sole purpose for existence.

If anyone were to take agood look at who in particular is at the center of all these meaningless "BLOGFIGHTS" you will see one variable each time.

Bernard V. O"Hare the III (Is that elitist enough for you?)

go ahead Bernie, launch into one of your vaunted ad hominem attacks against me, call me a political kneebreaker, whatever.

I don't give a flying fuck, because I have more important things to do than TROLL the blogosphere 24/7 as a self appointed policeman and decider of what is proper.

I hope to high heaven that on judgement day, when you stand before God, that she judges you with the same brutality that you have judged the rest of us you self righteous prick.

Bernie O'Hare has become the face of Blog Hate. For all his trumpeting against media and how it abides hate speech, it is undeniable who the biggest purveyor and participant in that vile activity is. Bernie O'Hare.

So go ahead, Fire at will Bernie, you can't do me any harm. So spend the next twelve hours composing your 20,000 word point by point rebuttal to my ten minutes of vent. I'll be in bed sleeping soundly while you gnash your teeth and vow revenge.

I'll go to work tomorrow and collect my salary, while you sit in front of your laptop in your underwear and pray you get a call to research a title. Because even McDonalds wouldn't hire your fat ass to take money at the window, you would scare the kids and probably poach from the happy meals.

I haven't laughed this hard in a while. Good night Bernie!

((Wait, there's more))

Bernie O'Hare is the penultimate hate blogger, as you now have more than enough evidence of your own. I don't make that assertion out of thin air, all I have to do is read the excerpts from his blog that are emailed to me regularly.

Ethics Board:

Here's a simple yet graphic example of how "Closed Loop Cronyism" works around here, easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. The Morning Call's punch-pulling article on Donovan/Ethics Board Investigation does not allow for reader comments, like 99.9% of the Morning Call's other online stories, so I cannot comment, and add anything online to the newspaper's tightly controlled (muzzled) version of what's really going on in this story.

2. The Morning Call's online version of the story, incredibly, now links to Bernie O'Hare's slanted "take" on things ... and you may recall that Bernie O'Hare is one of the bloggers who posted libelous comments about me at Donovan's blog. Objective other "news" source? Or crony-connected vested interest? You decide.

3. O'Hare's 1-sided account (just like The Morning Call's) does not refer readers to our blog, for a look at "our take" on this story. Isn't this convenient?

So the monopoly newspaper, and the monopoly newspaper-dominated local blogosphere, are working together, to shut me up.

This is not right ...

Amazing. Donovan the lunatic now becomes the poster boy for integrity and high-minded intellectual ideas after he is called out by one of his victims.
No one had anything good to say about Donovan until now. Perfect example of the saying: "My enemy's enemy is my friend."
Still, notice that the only Donovan defenders are his anonymous co-conspirators, the dis-barred lawyer and the Mayor-wannabe Mr. Grinch. No more proof is needed for me to conclude that Donovan is dead meat, politically speaking.
There must have been some recognition of Donovan's behavior, for the ethics board to review the complaint. The board could have dismissed it without comment, if it was indeed frivolous, as the erstwhile barrister proclaimed.

Q. Do I, as the complainant, have any rights at all in this process?

For example, was I supposed to know to check the public notices in the newspaper for when a meeting would be scheduled?

Is there no procedure, or requirement, in the City's ethics board activities regarding notifying the complainant of an "event."

Also, I have some very reasonable questions on the table that are being ignored.

Is there an appeal mechanism? Has time expired for Donovan to request a hearing?

Is Wednesday's meeting open to the public?

I need answers here.

And I'll (politely) come to your homes over this holiday weekend unannounced to pose them in person if you don't answer them by 5:00pm on Saturday.

* not reporting on Robert LaBarre's VIP AWOL Belize vacation (while on bail for homicide)

* not reporting on the numerous relevant precedent DUI 3rd degree murder cases on the books in PA

* not reporting on D.A. Martin secretly moving a crucial LaBarre court appearance (guilty plea hearing) up 10 days and not telling the Villa family

* that shameful day after sentencing headline

* lying about the civil jury's verdict (i.e., reporting that O'Malley's bar was found "not negligent" when they were in fact ruled negligent)

* Waving around quotes from the O'Malley's defendant that were completely false ("They'll never see a dime")

* Refusing to correct/publish the jury's actual true verdict for a month

* refusing Bill a "welcome mat" meeting 229 times

* refusing to address the "excellent questions that deserve to be answered" (the Morning Call's own investigations editor Tim Darragh's words) regarding a DUI homicide case Bill caught Jim Martin fixing (successfully) the night before trial

* Deleting & blocking Bill's comments at mcall.com blogs (MC Forum, Bill White, John Micek, Queen City Daily)

* Banning Bill from the MC's building (and solely b/c Bill asks too many excellent questions that deserve to be answered)

* Dave Erdman STILL refusing to meet w/ Bill, EVEN THOUGH ERDMAN'S BOSS TIM RYAN TOLD BILL TO MEET W/ ERDMAN

and I'm sure I'm forgetting lots more ...

but after all THIS.. all of a sudden ...

* a semi-fair article in last Wednesday's paper (albeit highly BV-Muzzled and comment-disabled on the web)

* deleting their ludicrous link to O'Hare's totally subjective and self-serving blog post on a story (Donovan/Ethics Board) that's really about O'Hare (and Casey and Molovinsky)

It is a nice little ray of optimistic hope ...

Bill Villa said...

Thanks 8:16, we had such a GREAT TIME playing Mayfair yesterday. Kudos to volunteer stage manager Nancy and Jim and the Lakeside Stage sound crew, they were all super buttoned-up and professional and did a fantastic job on both the stage sound (our monitor mixes) and the "house sound," i.e., what the audience hears. The crowd was GREAT too, about 85% of the tent's seating capacity which the crew told us was very impressive for an "early" (2:30pm) show. On Sundays the performance crowds don't usually build until supper time and after, so THANKS to all those Villas fans who got up and out early to see us. THANKS too to the crush of fans and friends who rushed the backstage area and clogged up the band changeover zone wishing us well ("mea culpa" again, Nancy!)

For us the biggest compliment we got yesterday was having the amazingly & stunningly GREAT duo KATO (who played the slot before us) hang for our set and tell us afterwards at length how much they enjoyed our set. We had watched their set from the stage wings and our jaws were on the floor as usual; we've seen them several times before but they had never seen us. If you've never seen KATO, well, you've got to. They sound like a 10-piece band (it's just the 2 of them), w/ both singing their asses off, Pat playing the congas, and Craig playing multiple keyboards that cover bass lines and horn sections-- they're really incredible and there's nobody like them. They play regularly w/ legendary giants like Bernard Purdie.

We also appreciated hearing from so many people that they did not see or hear any evidence of our nearly 3 year layoff in our typically Villas "power pop hemi-powered w/ some punk" performance.

So THANKS, the most, to Bill Wehbe (keyboards), Dave Follweiler (keys/accordion), Kevin Groller (drums), Dave Baun (bass), and Gianni Villa (who made his stage debut on percussion and nailed everything like he's been in the Villas all along). Three years is a lot of "ring rust" to get rid of but all those obsessive/compulsive rehearsals youse all showed up for did the trick!

Very Special too for me was seeing Sheena's mom Barb and our 10-month young granddaughter Shiloh Marie Villa in the 1st row grinning and clapping.

Look for more Villas gigs coming soon.

I was watching to see if anybody in the audience walked out during My Occupation, and nobody did, which did my bleeding heart proud, of them.

The Morning Call "newspaper" has re-installed its link at mcall.com on their Renshaw Donovan/Ethics Investigation story to their Valley Blogosphere pal O'Hare's 1-sided and subjectively grinding ax of a "story" at LV Ramblings ... after having deleted it a coupla days ago. Geez. Only way for us to interpret this is as a declaration of (and an invitation to) war.

The "newspaper" not reviewing our Mayfair show is what did it for me ;D

Let's give 'em the benefit of the (total incompetence) doubt
and an opportunity to answer, first ...

Jarrett, question, re: your Donovan/Ethics Board Investigation story from last Wednesday at mcall.com ...

Allentown Ethics Board to rule on blog allegation

When your story originally appeared online, there was no link at the bottom of it to Bernie O'Hare's laughably 1-sided and subjectively grinding ax of a related "story" at LV Ramblings.

Soon after though, incredibly, a link to O'Hare's account as "Other Allentown Sources" appeared at the bottom of your story online. And I say "incredibly" because O'Hare is one of the two local bloggers (Chris Casey being the other one) who signed clearly libelous comments at Mike Donovan's blog, and it is O'Hare and Casey who are the main reasons why Donovan's in the ethical hot water he's in right now.

So it's astoundingly incredible that The Morning Call ... after not allowing comments on this story so that I couldn't add anything to it online ... would then link (and in a purposeful "peek-a-boo" fashion, apparently) to O'Hare's "account."

After we called the Morning Call out on this here at LVS, the link disappeared.

But now it's back.

Is there anything you can tell me about this peek-a-boo linkage phenomena?

Bill and Angel, seems like the "boycott the Villas at Mayfair" movement (as was incited at Arts Commissioner Mike Donovan's blog) was a total flop, eh?

Was even O'Hare himself there w/ "noisemakers" as he pledged he would do?

Nope.

No sign of "ALFONSO TODD AND ASSOCIATES" neither.
